REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE

"THE UV RACE: AUTONOMY AND DELIBERATION" w/ Evan Minsker

Ep. 162

My guest this week is Evan Minsker (Critic/Journalist for Pitchfork & the heart behind the amazing punk newsletter See/Saw) who (...wait for it...) picked a very punk film: Autonomy And Deliberation, by a very Australian AND very punk band The UV Race. And although it has never been publicly released, the director and the band let us watch it so we can discuss it for you! Got it yet?!?!?

We talk about why the finished film never reached eyes outside of a few friends in Australia, Evan’s early punk rock roots, the fear of being reviewed on Pitchfork, not being able to get into the venue to see Fugazi and Scratch Acid (so you listen to them outside), the amazing punk scenes and punk labels happening all around the world right now, alternative DIY spaces, being the oldest person at the show (at age 27), Turnstile, how The UV Race has no wikipedia page/follows no one back on social media/embraces broken web links, the poetry of front man Marcus, the mystery surrounding the director Johann Rashid and his film inluences as a child which influenced his filmmaking, Courtney Barnett, the self-depricating tone of the film, the cameos from members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Dick Diver & Total Control, the soundtrack for the unreleased film, blowing the band money at the Greyhound Track, how the structure of the film is bascially The Blues Brothers ("I’ve got to get the band back together"), how the film is built upon the band’s inner workings/language and sense of humor, Marcus' other band Hot Tubs Time Machine, their also unseen Sci-Fi followup: THE UV RACE DISGRACE SPACE, and we pitch a new film to complete their filmic trilogy.

My guest this week is Josh Kantor (Organist for The Boston Red Sox; keyboardists w/ The Dream Syndicate, The Split Squad & The Baseball Project), who picked the Stevie Wonder LP, film score and theatrical film, The Secret Life Of Plants. We discuss Josh playing with Mavis Staples and Peter Buck, his mentorship from the legendary Clem Burke and playing in a band with him, the influence of Nancy Faust (the White Sox organist) on him, transforming the endless musical requests he gets while playing organ at the ball park (ranging from Black Sabbath to Maceo Parker), our experiences as children with Stevie Wonder’s Journey Through "The Secret Life Of Plants" double lp, the strange tale of how this film and album got made, albums made specifically for plants, the head-scratching un-released sequel to the book The Secret Life Of Plants, how the film's director (Walon Green) also wrote the screenplays for Sorcerer & The Wild Bunch and created the freaky tunnel scene in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, how the film's producer would describe the film to Stevie Wonder as he created the soundtrack, how this was the first time sampling was used on a commercial recording, using animals sounds throughout the record, the floral-scented first pressing of the LP, screaming vegetables and boiling shrimp experiments shown in the film, how the real science in the film gets dwarfed by pseudo science, Josh's high school recording of "Come Back As A Flower", the incredible trilogy of Stevie Wonder songs at the end of the film, how and why the LP and tour flopped on its intial release, the shock of Stevie Wonder showing up within the actual film and more!SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS MOVIE:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2aAd5gXixYJOSH KANTOR:https://www.instagram.com/jtkantorREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. This week I'm joined by the legendary Sally Timms & Jon Langford of The Mekons to discuss not only their music documentary The Revenge Of The Mekons but the iconic film Trances about the Moroccan band Nass El Ghiwane (which was the first film Martin Scorsese restored as part of his World Cinema Project). We discuss the mixed feelings both bands had regarding being the subject of a documentary, breaking open the various myths about The Mekons, coming out of the "Elf Rock" of the early 70s and the inevitability of punk rock being created, Dub music being omnipresent in pre-punk, The Buzzcocks as an influence, Northern England weirdo bands, Bob Last of Fast Product signing the band (which made The Mekons break their own strict rule of not recording after their first show), The Mekons meeting musicologist Bill Leader (the Alan Lomax of british folk music), how the band makes music through subtraction, taking older traditions and bending them to your will, what resonated with them about the film Trances and how the film tells the story through the poetic imagery vs. talking heads, were The Mekons supposed to be in the iconic music concert film Urgh A Music War and more!REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss.
