Episode 1

Season 1, Ep. 1

In this episode, Lyndsay Muir talks with Professor Vini Lander, director of the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality (CRED) at Leeds Beckett University. Established in 2017 by Professor Shirley Anne Tate, Vini Lander took over as director of CRED in autumn 2019.

The centre aims to highlight and address the persistent and pervasive presence of racism in education and society.

Vini explains that CRED offers an MA in Race, Education, and Decolonial thought, which attracts educators and practitioners from various fields.

The centre undertakes research to understand the experiences of people of colour and supports teachers in understanding and combating racism, working with professionals across all sectors to develop anti-racist practices and to challenge racism in all its forms.

As well as describing her research data collection in 2023 as ‘the most harrowing I’ve ever undertaken’, Vini also shares her hopes and aspirations for greater racial and social justice for the future. In particular she tells Lyndsay about the submission she made earlier the same morning to Professor Becky Francis’ who is leading the government’s education curriculum and assessment review.
