Reise durchs Mittelalter

Im Jahr 1095 ruft Papst Urban II. zum bewaffneten Zug in den Osten auf. Was folgt, wird zu einem der folgenreichsten Ereignisse des Mittelalters. Tausende Menschen machen sich auf den Weg ins Heilige Land. Ritter, Fürsten, Geistliche und einfache Pilger ziehen durch fremde Länder, überwinden gewaltige Entfernungen und geraten in Belagerungen, Hungersnöte und blutige Konflikte. Doch der Weg nach Jerusalem ist nicht nur ein Kampf gegen äußere Feinde. Auch unter den Kreuzfahrern herrschen Rivalitäten, Machtkämpfe und unterschiedliche Vorstellungen vom Ziel ihrer Reise. Der Erste Kreuzzug führt von Papst Urbans Aufruf in Clermont über den sogenannten Volkskreuzzug und die Belagerung Antiochias bis zur Eroberung Jerusalems. Diese endet in einem Massaker an der muslimischen und jüdischen Bevölkerung. Doch was trieb die Menschen tatsächlich an? War es allein der Glaube? Welche Rolle spielten politische Interessen, persönliche Ambitionen und die Macht des Papsttums?
