Trauma comes from the Greek word for “wound”. Today we recognise trauma in first aid as sudden and severe physical injuries that require immediate attention, these are usually caused by an external force against the body as a result of accidents, falls, violence, or natural disasters. Statistics in the UK suggest that approximately 16,000 people die from trauma each year in England and Wales alone and with Trauma as the leading cause of death in people under 40 in the UK.
