The Gift of Rest

Season 3, Ep. 126
Scripture

Exodus 20:8–11 (NRSV)

Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy.

Six days you shall labor and do all your work.

But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God;

you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter,

your male or female slave, your livestock,

or the alien resident in your towns.

For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth,

the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day;

therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.

Refrain

Rest is not withdrawal, it is return.

Poem

Wendell Berry, from A Timbered Choir

“Teach me work that honors Thy work,

the true economies of goods and words,

to make my arts compatible with the songs of the local birds.

Teach me patience beyond work—

and, beyond patience, the blest Sabbath of Thy unresting love

which lights all things and gives rest.”

    05:06||Season 4, Ep. 67
    ScripturePhilippians 3:13–14 (NRSVUE)Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.RefrainI press on toward what is ahead.QuoteFrederick Buechner, from Wishful Thinking"The grace of God means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn't have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid. I am with you. Nothing can ever separate us. It's for you I created the universe. I love you. There's only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you'll reach out and take it. Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too.”
