Podstruck: A Rom-Com Rewind
Always Be My Maybe: All Hail Keanu (with Alex Song-Xia)
CATEGORY: BFFS WHO ARE DTF
This week we are joined by comedian Alex Song-Xia (The Tonight Show, Rick & Morty, Praise Petey) to cover the next rom-com in our BFFs Who Are DTF bucket, "Always Be My Maybe." This movie has an all-star cast with Ali Wong, Randall Park, Michelle Buteau, and an Oscar worthy cameo by Keanu Reeves! We cover whether Randall Park's character is even worthy of Ali Wong's, the perks of being a latchkey kid, and how de-aging actors is a delicate dance between believability and just making them look like a narc. Plus we'll dive into whether being in your high school band well into your thirties is a good idea or not, why Sasha Tran is opening so many restaurants and how that might not be a good idea in 2019, and debate whether buying all your boyfriend's merch to make him feel better about himself is a good move or not. Join us for a movie that took us on a real rollercoaster of emotions! And yes, Alex did cry!

88. 50 First Dates: Pineapple of Lies
01:15:32||Season 2, Ep. 88CATEGORY: UH-OH AMNESIAIn this week's episode we cover the 2004 Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore rom-com, 50 First Dates, the movie that dared to ask, what if we redid Groundhog Day but made it even more ethically questionable? We'll travel back to 2004 and discuss whether the animal jokes hold up (or ever made sense to begin with?), why Rob Schneider should maybe not be playing a Hawaiian man despite being a quarter Filipino, and why even with a rocky act one, we still can't help but enjoy this movie. Plus, we debate how you pronounce Barrymore... if ANYONE has the answer to this please let us know immediately. This episode was edited by Nick Duke: https://www.instagram.com/n_dukie/ Follow Podstruck on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podstruckpod/Get bonus episodes on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/Podstruckpod

86. Pillow Talk: Party Line! Excellent! (with Joe Randazzo)
01:19:32||Season 2, Ep. 86CATEGORY: LOTHARIOS IN LOVEWe continue our collection of playboys turned loverboys this week with the Rock Hudson Doris Day classic Pillow Talk, with special guest Joe Randazzo (The Onion, @midnight). Despite being made in 1959, this movie has a ton of humor, heart, and a whole lotta leg to get your blood pumping... as well as a few sexist/violent moments that will make you very glad it's not 1959 anymore. We talk about the mind games Brad Allen is playing, why Jan needs to find a new hair dresser, who got Oscar nominations, the insane score for this film, and the part where the main characters become ghosts. After seeing this movie, should we bring back party lines?Listen to Joe's funny podcast: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-the-dr-sex-reese-show-91432379/This episode was edited by Nick Duke: https://www.instagram.com/n_dukie/ Follow Podstruck on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podstruckpod/Get bonus episodes on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/Podstruckpod
85. Crazy, Stupid, Love: B Plots Gone Wild
01:15:26||Season 2, Ep. 85CATEGORY: LOTHARIOS IN LOVEThis week we dart back to 2011 for Dan Fogelman's romantic comedy: Crazy, Stupid, Love! Chelsea and Elena dig into the multiple intersecting storylines and discuss whether Steve Carell is hotter than Kevin Bacon, Emma Stone's fear of the Dirty Dancing lift, Josh Groban's brilliant turn as Emma Stone's douchebag boyfriend, and our deep love for Steve Carell as a leading rom-com man. Along with some fun light discussion about venturing into our own mid life crises! 83. The Drama: Putting The Tension in Sexual Tension
01:13:13||Season 2, Ep. 83CATEGORY: I DO... I THINKPodstruck is finishing our wedding category with the brand new A24 rom-com adjacent black comedy The Drama starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. We discuss whether some critics were right to be upset by the misleading marketing for this movie and whether it makes light of sensitive topics or is a fresh approach to an American obsession. And of course we unpack the worst things that we have personally ever done and why teenage brains are just a bit deranged. Plus Alana Haim should get an Oscar for Best Acting of an Unlikable Character. It's a movie that will get your butthole clenched, make you gasp, and have you tittering with laughter... just please do not bring your baby to see it. 01:21:49||Season 2, Ep. 82CATEGORY: I DO... I THINKContinuing our collection of wedding rom-coms, Podstruck looks back this week at Four Weddings and a Funeral, the Hugh Grant breakout movie that turned him into a romantic comedy star. Mark Vigeant (Dropout, Edinburgh Fringe Fest) joins Chelsea and Elena to debate whether Andie MacDowell brings the heat or is a beautiful ice sculpture, why Cameron Crowe should envy Mike Newell's vignettes, the warm worlds that Richard Curtis writes even if they also have some sexism, what beer douchebags drink in the U.K., the incredible slate of side characters including Rowan Atkinson, how learning sign language can get you laid, and the most heartbreaking part of a truly sob-worthy funeral. It's a classic that absolutely deserves a rewatch. 01:40:11||Season 2, Ep. 81CATEGORY: I DO... I THINK We continue our bucket of wedding rom-coms with the 1999 Gary Marshall flick, Runaway Bride, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere! Can these two recapture the electricity they had in Pretty Woman? We discuss all of this and more as Chelsea and Elena are joined by their husbands, the Jo(h)ns, to discuss this surprisingly divisive movie. So join us as Chelsea questions Richard Gere’s status as a leading man, Elena has the revelation that Rita Wilson is still alive, and Chelsea gets worked up over a shoulder bite reference that never pays off. 80. 27 Dresses: Scraps of A Classic
01:40:32||Season 2, Ep. 80CATEGORY: I DO... I THINK This week Podstruck is launching a new collection of wedding rom-coms starting with 27 Dresses! This 2008 romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl and James Marsden asks how a movie about terrible people can be charming and the answer is "Benny And The Jets." We pitch ways that this Aline Brosh McKenna script filled with smart dialogue could have been tightened for clearer plotting and we call out the insane moments like the gentlest car crash on earth and the the confusing racist turn that none of us were looking for. And is $20 a peek a good price for a look at Heigl's heinie? Listen on this long but goofy episode.
