In this second episode of our series Perspectives on Purpose, we’ll be discussing the role of the State, its relationship with business and its obligations to citizens and society. Calls for a more purpose led partnership between business and the Government will be debated, reviewing how in practical terms it can be implemented. We’ll also ask how abandoned communities can be revived by rethinking the way national and local institutions work - for the greater good. Joining the discussion this time is Phillip Ullmann, Chief Energiser of Recruitment Giant, Cordant Group and Lord Glasman of Stoke Newington and Stamford Hill, Labour Peer, Political Theorist and Founder of Blue Labour.
  • 1. Perspectives on Purpose with Phillip Ullmann

#Socialentrepreneur Phillip Ullmann (Founder Cordant Group, Revenues £900m) has been working up a series of concepts around Covenant – the idea that society is in a binding relationship with itself to share power, benefits and responsibilities to better opportunities for all. (See covenantadvisory.com) In his view, #purpose thinking must now permeate business and society more so than at any other time. It’s the cure to fix Capitalism’s broken model and can save businesses license to operate in a less trusting age. This podcast explores how purpose could be the new sun in a fresh Copernican revolution, shaping decisions across government and society. Phillip has been advocating the case for #socialbusiness for the past few years, arguing for the distribution of profits to a broader range of stakeholders, reducing shareholder primacy, tackling inequality, and creating a fairer society. Uniting the private sector’s #entrepreneurialism with the public sector’s talent and reach will mean more effective collaboration and co-creation at a critical time to revitalise the economy. This will provide opportunity to change the nature and behaviour of business, showing it can heal, not hurt, society.
