PSP 315: Turning OCD Pain into Passion | Shaun Flores

Shaun Flores had been suffering from OCD for years without knowing it. He hopped from OCD theme to OCD theme, listening to OCD’s lies and searching for certainty with each new worry.

It wasn’t until 2022, when he finally met the right therapist, that he learned that all of his fears had one explanation, OCD.

Shaun has turned his OCD pain into a passion to advocate. Since his diagnosis he has added a new face to the OCD advocacy scene. A face that was desperately underrepresented. As a black man, he is helping normalize a disorder that doesn’t care about race, ethnicity or gender.

In this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I had the honor to talk to Shaun about his journey with OCD and the incredible work he is doing to help others.

  • PSP 329: What to Do When Your Child with OCD or Anxiety Won’t Discuss it

    42:40
Often parents give up before they even start because their child with OCD or anxiety refuses to talk. It is easy to think there is nothing you can do if you can’t get your child to discuss their anxiety or OCD.But there is always a place to start, always. Kids refuse to talk about anxiety or OCD for various issues. Here are some common ones:-They have a hard time expressing their emotions in general-They are embarrassed about having anxiety or OCD-They think you’ll force them to work on their issues-They don’t fully trust you or your reactions -They don’t want to burden you or increase your anxiety-They are worried about what you’ll think-They have a stereotypical view of these issues which causes shameSo where to start? The first step is to figure out why the shutdown is occurring. Does your child struggle communicating with you in general? Do they have a hard time expressing difficult situations? Or is this specific to just anxiety or OCD struggles? In this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast we discuss reasons why kids refuse to talk about anxiety or OCD and what to do to help them move forward.YouTube video for kids and teens: Do You Avoid Talking About Anxiety or OCD****This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. • PSP 327: Reducing Inflammation to Improve Mental Health

    01:01:48
We are hearing more and more about how inflammation is implicated in many mental health issues including anxiety and OCD. But what does that mean? Are there ways we can see if our child is struggling with inflammation? Are there things we can change in their diet or lifestyle that will reduce inflammation?I don’t know those answers, but I do know someone who does! That is why I invited Dr. Ann Kulze, a renowned physician and founder of the Healthy Living School to come and talk to us. Dr. Ann has been featured on the Dr. Oz show, Oprah and Friends Radio, Time, and WebMD sharing her expertise in this area.🌸 To get 30% off Dr. Ann’s course, How to Eat to Reduce Inflammation, click here.Note from the show: On the podcast Dr. Ann recommended testing “hsCRP” and “Sed rate”. However, she’s unsure if they have standards for doing the hsCRP in kids and imagines pediatricians would likely say they don’t run hsCRP. Sed rates are not super sensitive but can give some indication of inflammation. A sed rate will only be positive in context of higher levels of inflammation as occurs in context of healing or self-defense.🌸 Want to join the AT Parenting Community? Many OCD issues including Emetophobia, Moral OCD, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Orthorexia, PANDAS/PANS and ARFID can impact our kids ability to eat.In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore the various OCD issues that can overlap Eating Disorders and some that can be incorrectly diagnosed and treated as only an Eating Disorder.Click here to watch my short Youtube video on Orthorexia.🌸 Click here to join my FREE series running August 3-11 called Self Care for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD.****This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. • PSP 325: OCD Recovery and Maintenance with Shaun Flores

    54:32
Shaun Flores was only a couple of years into his own struggle with OCD when he became an OCD advocate. He quickly became a stronger messenger of hope through his OCD awareness work. Recently I had Shaun back on the AT Parenting Survival podcast to discuss how his OCD recovery is going, what he does to maintain progress and how the perception of recovery can be part of a bigger issue. As Shaun discussed his recovery it became apparent how OCD decimated his financial stability, derailed his career path and left him in debt. Despite those issues, Shaun continued to be a shining light for others. I have created a Go Fund Me account to show Shaun how much the OCD community appreciates him and all the work he has done. The funds will help Shaun find that stable grounding, cover expenses related to his upcoming knee surgery and help him claw out of the financial hole OCD put him in. 🌸 Any amount will show Shaun he is valued.
