PSP: 230: How to Help Kids Who are Scared of Needles and Shots

Most people aren’t thrilled to get a shot or get poked by a needle, but some of our kids are deathly afraid. This fear can cause severe panic when going to the doctor, the dentist or worse the lab or hospital!

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I invited a co-host who knows this topic inside and out, my nine-year-old daughter. We talk about what type of fears often pop up around shots and needles and what steps can be taken to reduce your child’s anxiety.

PSP 273 Are You Remembering Your Own Mental Health?

When we are raising a child with anxiety or OCD it can be all consuming. So consuming that we put everything on hold, including our own mental health. This is a slippery slope because without our own mental stability, we won’t be able to be an anchor for our child. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore why it is so crucial we focus on our own mental health and how this will actually help our children as well. Also, I’m cooking up an OCD online, on-demand class just for kids and teens to teach them those life long skills to handle those waves! PSP: 272 Dealing with Disappointment when Anxiety or OCD Comes Back

It can feel so good when anxiety and OCD pack their bags and give you your child back. Heck, give you your home back. So it can be more than jarring, when that unwanted guest shows back up at your front door.It is normal to feel disappointment, hopelessness and fear. What if things get really bad again? What if all our progress goes out the window? What if this is a life sentence? Those are understandable feelings after riding past storms. But anxiety and OCD symptoms come and go and all those skills they patiently grew haven’t disappeared. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to handle those feelings of overwhelm when anxiety or OCD symptoms show up once again. Feelings of overwhelm that not only impact your child, but you as well. Also, I’m cooking up an OCD online, on-demand class just for kids and teens to teach them those life long skills to handle those waves! PSP: 271 Fighting OCD is Often Not What Kids Think

You’ll often hear the word “fight your OCD.” In fact, one of my favorite books about OCD is called Talking Back to OCD, by John March. But sometimes kids misunderstand what this means (and parents too). When we talk about fighting OCD we are usually talking about a counterintuitive way to push back. A way to approach OCD that may not seem like traditional “fighting” at all.In this week’s podcast I talk about the counterintuitive way to “fight” OCD and why we need to clarify this with our kids.I’m cooking up an OCD online, on-demand class just for kids and teens!
