• How do we balance our needs and desires with a willingness to rely on a sovereign God whose ways are beyond our ways? Compare Jacob’s interaction with God to Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:36).

• Jacob’s dream features a link between heaven and earth which points to the role of Israel and ultimately to Christ as the true cosmic axis. How can we understand our lives or communities as conduits that mediate the meeting of heaven and earth?
