Notre Dame Football Secures Top Safety Recruit Joey OBrien: A Major Win for Coach Marcus Freemans Program
Notre Dame football has officially welcomed Joey OBrien, the top safety recruit in the two thousand twenty-six class, to the Fighting Irish. OBrien, ranked as the twenty-fifth overall player nationally and the third-best prospect in Pennsylvania, chose Notre Dame over twenty-four other top programs. He verbally committed to the Irish on June twentieth and officially signed on National Signing Day.
OBrien is considered a five-star recruit by the Rivals Industry Ranking, which combines ratings from several recruiting services. Hes one of four five-star prospects in Notre Dames two thousand twenty-six class, showcasing the strength of their recruiting efforts. Interestingly, OBrien attends the same school as another Notre Dame commit, offensive tackle Grayson McKeogh, who is also a highly-rated five-star recruit.
OBriens commitment to the Irish came just two days after McKeogh committed and seven days after their official visit to Notre Dame. His decision was influenced by the defensive backs coach, Mike Mickens, and the director of recruiting, Carter Auman. OBrien was offered by Notre Dame during their St. Patricks Day themed Pot of Gold Day event on March seventeenth.
Initially leaning towards Oregon after his visit, OBriens perspective changed during his official visit to South Bend, realizing how amazing the place was. This highlights the significant impact of the campus experience and the recruiting staff. OBriens father even mentioned that it would have been incredibly difficult for Joey to tell Carter they chose another school, showcasing the strong bond they formed.
