Not All Fire

Episode 115 - w/ Brent Brooks

Season 1, Ep. 115
•

Jude chats to Brent Brooks, Assistant Deputy Chief for Training, Hazmat and Logistics at Fredericton Fire in New Brunswick. Brent previously spent 31 years with Toronto Fire, where he was their high-rise specialist, and is the creator of the High-Rise Firefighting website, which shares best-practice firefighting techniques for tall buildings from around the world.

They discuss the importance of considering firefighters and operational response when designing buildings or making changes to internal layouts, from the positioning of fire doors to the location of hydrants and dry riser inlets.

They also explore an interesting comparison: when we fly or go on a cruise, we are routinely taken through fire and emergency safety procedures, yet residents moving into high-rise buildings are often given nowhere near the same level of information about what to do in an emergency or how the fire safety measures within their building work.
