TOP 5 LUCKY NUMBERS ft. Clare Martin

NO ENCORE returns following Dave Hanratty's confectionery clown and professional wrestler-assisted birthday and subsequent bout with Covid-19! He's mostly refreshed if also understandably a little tired.

Thankfully, the great Clare Martin of Paste Magazine and the recent episode we did about Swifties fame is here to inject some life - and some good fortune - into proceedings.

It's all about the concept of luck this week, per Clare's chosen Top 5. So spin the wheel and see if your numbers come in. Or something.

Don't forget, you can get this and every new NO ENCORE episode 24 hours early and ad-free, AND additional bonus audio content by signing up to Patreon.com/NOENCORE.

ACT ONE (7:01): Dave finally confronts Brat Summer, Tenacious D are no more, Jonker 2 is back on the menu, the 'should we ban phones at shows?' debate rages on, and an inspired birthday present keeps things on the positive.

ACT TWO (45:02): Top 5 Lucky Numbers

  • OASIS TICKETS DYNAMIC PRICING ROW ft. Jim Carroll

    37:09|
A national emergency (not really) provokes a bonus NO ENCORE (yes, really) as Dave Hanratty attempts to wrap his head around the great Oasis ticketing scandal of 2024. What a difference a week and some last-minute dynamic pricing make, eh? Last Saturday has been and gone, and so too have the hopes and dreams of many crushed Britpop fans. As for those who found their way to the top of a very long queue? Well, they either walked away in protest at a sudden colossal spike in ticket prices, or they're going to be budgeting hard for the next month to come. Call it dynamic pricing, call it an 'in demand' ticket, call it the price of doing ruthless business, call it plain old greed - whatever the phrasing, Liam and Noel Gallagher find themselves counting an awful lot of cash as many disgruntled fans suffer the cost. On this episode, Dave is joined by Jim Carroll, RTÉ Brainstorm editor and former (well, mostly) outspoken music journalist of renown, to examine the questionable mechanics of the Mancunian money machine.

  • FILM CLUB #01 | Hackers (1995)

    01:10:24|
A change of pace this week as we introduce our new stream of Patreon-exclusive bonus content with a feature-length free sample. Joining the already-established Album Club is the NO ENCORE Film Club, in which Dave Hanratty and ex-Le Galaxie hitman Michael Pope convene to discuss the plot mechanics, onscreen standout performances, offscreen production anecdotes, and overall pop culture legacy of a chosen film. Unlike the currently-on-hiatus NO POPCORN, there does not need to be a music-related connection to the motion picture in question, so it’s a free-for-all of cinematic offerings - both good and bad - that take our fancy. And so the boys kick things off in boisterous cyberpunk style with 1995 box office bomb turned cult favourite - HACKERS. A chilling vision of things to come, or a crazy swing-and-miss attempt to capture sexy technological zeitgeist and future all at once? Dave and Michael run through the plot, soundtrack, casting, and general notoriety of a film that confounded critics yet created a die-hard community that persists to this day. The first episode of Film Club is free to all ears. Subsequent episodes will be housed exclusively at patreon.com/noencore and will drop on the second Sunday of the month, alternating between new episodes of Album Club. If you like what you hear and want more, please consider supporting our show. And remember; HACK THE PLANET~!-Follow Dave and Michael on Letterboxd
