NO ENCORE

MODERN COMEDY MUSIC ft. Michael Fry

Ep. 377

Make 'em laugh. NO ENCORE returns with a spring in its step as we pratfall, clown-style, head-first into the labyrinthine world of music-themed comedy.

Dave Hanratty admits that he's something of a sceptic when it comes to this most theatrical realm. Luckily, he has called on ace social media sensation Michael Fry to navigate the up-tempo terrain.

Michael is well-regarded for his own forays into music-focused sketch comedy, not least with his array of one-man indie band stylings. There are many aspects to the comedy and music collision, however, and Michael just so happens to be deeply fascinated by such methods.

And so he takes us on a side-splitting journey on this particularly melodic episode...

  • 421. TOP 5 FALL OUT BOY SONGS ft. Hugh Carr

    01:41:09||Ep. 421
    This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn podcast. Normal business resumes following last week's debut Film Club offering as Hugh Carr of iRadio fame returns to the co-host microphone, and he's got five bulletproof Fall Out Boy songs with him in honour of this week's rather nostalgia-fuelled main event. Throw in a stacked news section and it's all to play for on NO ENCORE this week. Don't forget, you can get this and every new NO ENCORE episode 24 hours early and ad-free, AND additional bonus audio content by signing up to Patreon.com/NOENCORE.ACT ONE (4:20): Following the tragic and untimely passing of Eoin French aka Talos, we try to find some words to honour the man's memory and the wonderful music he leaves behind. ACT TWO (10:10): Our weekly news section features a typically ebullient Melvin Benn, the Olympics closing ceremony overloading Shazam, Nine Inch Nails providing a valid reason to see a Jared Leto movie, Kurt Cobain sparking a thoroughly modern debate, Ian Wright being awesome, a producer of a classic pop song sounding off, and the most important songs of Bryan Danielson's life. ACT THREE (45:25): Top 5 Fall Out Boy Songs.-Follow Hugh Carr on Instagram / X / TikTokListen to Seansalaíthe
  • FILM CLUB #01 | Hackers (1995)

    01:10:24|
    A change of pace this week as we introduce our new stream of Patreon-exclusive bonus content with a feature-length free sample. Joining the already-established Album Club is the NO ENCORE Film Club, in which Dave Hanratty and ex-Le Galaxie hitman Michael Pope convene to discuss the plot mechanics, onscreen standout performances, offscreen production anecdotes, and overall pop culture legacy of a chosen film. Unlike the currently-on-hiatus NO POPCORN, there does not need to be a music-related connection to the motion picture in question, so it’s a free-for-all of cinematic offerings - both good and bad - that take our fancy. And so the boys kick things off in boisterous cyberpunk style with 1995 box office bomb turned cult favourite - HACKERS. A chilling vision of things to come, or a crazy swing-and-miss attempt to capture sexy technological zeitgeist and future all at once? Dave and Michael run through the plot, soundtrack, casting, and general notoriety of a film that confounded critics yet created a die-hard community that persists to this day. The first episode of Film Club is free to all ears. Subsequent episodes will be housed exclusively at patreon.com/noencore and will drop on the second Sunday of the month, alternating between new episodes of Album Club. If you like what you hear and want more, please consider supporting our show. And remember; HACK THE PLANET~!-Follow Dave and Michael on Letterboxd

    Battle rap enthusiast Rudi Kinsella takes the coveted 'featured artist' tag as this week's NO ENCORE co-host, and he's only here to run down a bunch of off days and cash grabs by some of the best in the verbal business. It's time to highlight some of the best rappers in the game unleashing some of their most pathetic work ever recorded, all in the name of a special guest verse on someone else's track. Meanwhile, there's a.... fairly quiet news section. 01:05:12||Season 2, Ep. 24
    This month, Sonic Architect Adam returns to the visual realm of the music industry for the first since late 2022 to speak to photographer (and sometimes tour manager and guitar tech) Glen Bollard.If you have any interest in live shows or follow any Irish music publications, there's a 99% chance you've seen one of Glen's pictures. In this episode we discuss the inspirations and connections from the music world to the visual, as well as the many pinch-points of the industry in what could be one of the most open and honest discussions about sustainability in the music industry this series has seen to-date.*If you'd like to get this episode and all NO ENCORE episodes a full 24 hours earlier and ad-free, check us out over on Patreon here.*-Follow Glen Bollard on Instagram / XGlen's Website

    NO ENCORE returns following Dave Hanratty's confectionery clown and professional wrestler-assisted birthday and subsequent bout with Covid-19!
