Moment #70: What Can Hindsight Teach Us?

Moment #70 // There are any number of life lessons that I could absolutely have used earlier on, and lots of stuff that would have made me a better leader way sooner.

But, then again, with the benefit of hindsight and wisdom, I’ve come to realize that the depth and value of any lesson comes from the very fact that it’s hard fought and won.

If you learn by starting in the right place, going through the trial and error, (and, yes, a little of the essential pain), the lessons you learn stay learned... they are indelibly imprinted on your psyche.

If you want to hear my 7 life lessons, as well as the 2 critical leadership skills I developed later than I should have, listen to Ep.259: Things I Wish I’d Learned Earlier.

  • 328. Building Resilience Into the Fragile: THIS is a growth industry!

    21:28||Season 1, Ep. 328
    Episode #328 // After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, we seem to be reaching a more stable position on how work and life should coexist in a post-Covid world.But, just as stability seems within reach, there are other forces at play which could very well create the perfect storm.An older generation of workers is beginning to vacate the workforce, making way for fresh talent, new ideas, and different ways of working.A workforce that was historically compliant and relatively resilient, is gradually being replaced by one with an elevated sense of entitlement and a worrying lack of resilience.In this episode, I look at some of the root causes for the decline in individual resilience, the increase in anxiety, and the evolving expectations that people place on their employer to take accountability for their personal wellbeing.I show you how to build resilience into the fragile by adopting my one big idea, and my 7-step process for implementing it.Download the FREE PDF resource I created for this episode that means you can keep this 7-step process on hand.   ————————Get the insider edge with the No Bullsh!t Leadership Hub on Skool - completely FREE!Join like-minded leaders who love the podcast and dive into exclusive resources, real conversations, and weekly challenges designed to sharpen your leadership game.Don't miss out - join now!————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.

  • 327. Your Boss Is Probably Lying To You! How to read between the lines

    20:12||Season 1, Ep. 327
    Episode #327 // Bad news can be really tough to handle, especially when it’s so unexpected that you didn’t see it coming.At times like these, it’s human nature to try to find an explanation for what happened, so that you can process it and find some meaning. This enables you to eventually move on. The first place you’ll look for answers is in what we were told. When the boss delivered the bad news, how did she explain it? (because there’s always an explanation, right?!)It’s easy to latch onto what you’ve been told, especially when it’s laced with positive messages. But the story is often constructed purely to provide you with a soft landing — and it may be a long way from the reality of the situation.How would you know if your boss’s feedback is genuine, or if she’s just lying to you to avoid an escalation of conflict? In this episode, I give you some techniques to help you read between the lines, so that you can be better at sorting out fact from fiction.   ————————Join our FREE No Bullsh!t Leaders Hub on Skool. • 326. Accountability, Motivation, and Culture: A World-Class Leadership Playbook

    22:42||Season 1, Ep. 326
    Episode #326 // Yes I'm talking about Tom Brady again in this episode BUT DON'T KEEP SCROLLING! This episode is an absolute must-listen!!As you know, I occasionally take a leadership example from the world of professional sport, but it’s rare to see one of the greatest sportsmen of all time talking in detail about what makes a team great.I came across an article in Harvard Business Review, which fuses together the worlds of professional sport and business leadership to give us some indelible lessons on how to build excellence into team culture. We know that there will always be exceptional individuals, in every field, who rise up to become the focus of our attention, our admiration and – yes – even our criticism. But no individual can be truly successful without the right team around them, providing the foundations of support that enable them to achieve amazing things, individually. Today’s exploration into the principles of building a winning team, from a man widely considered to be the GOAT (the greatest of all time), offers some invaluable lessons in how to make your team really hum.  ————————Join our FREE No Bullsh!t Leaders Hub on Skool. • Moment #96 Not Every Organization Wants Performance

    04:58|
    Episode #96 // Every organization talks about performance – but not every organization is serious about it. When push comes to shove, many companies simply aren’t prepared to do the basic things that would deliver high performance. What are the telltale signs that the culture you’re a part of isn’t serious about driving performance… despite all the rhetoric to the contrary?If you want to go deeper on this silent performance killer, have a listen to Ep.239: Leading in a Low Performance Culture. ————————Join our FREE No Bullsh!t Leaders Hub on Skool. • 325. Finding Your Team's Superpower: The ONE thing that matters most

    20:39||Season 1, Ep. 325
    Episode #325 // I’m sure you hear me talk frequently about value creation. As a leader, your primary objective above all else is to deliver value. How you do that depends on your context. One of the key principles that enables this razor-sharp fixation on value is simplicity and focus. Simplifying your company's objectives, its work program, and its customer value proposition is a complex and difficult process – but if you can get it right, it opens the door to greatness.In this episode, I lay out a number of examples from the overwhelming body of knowledge that supports the principle of simplicity and focus. How can you use it to discover and develop your superpower, the one thing that matters most? I begin with a look at some of the most interesting published work on how to use simplicity and focus to maximize strategic value. I give you a real world example of a company that I worked for that had its superpower absolutely nailed. And I finish with some tips for evaluating where your own team is right now, so that you can identify and develop its unique superpower.  ————————Join our FREE No Bullsh!t Leaders Hub on Skool. • Moment #95 Epic Fails - All Care, No Responsibility

    05:10|
    Moment #95 // Working successfully in complex organizations requires collaboration. But you shouldn’t sacrifice strong accountabilities for the sake of collaboration.When you don’t structure your team’s work program around single-point accountability, it’s hard to know who’s doing what. Accountabilities  become opaque, confused, and misunderstood… and performance suffers accordingly.Most of the epic fails I witnessed in my corporate career were the consequence of shared or unclear accountabilities.If you want to go deeper on this critical leadership capability, have a listen to Ep.230: Too Many Cooks.  ————————Join our FREE No Bullsh!t Leaders Hub on Skool.
