Nerdy Show Book Club
Episode 12 :: Journey Into Mythic Fiction
•
From the pages of Nerdy Show – it’s Nerdy Show Book Club! In these literary episodes, we share the books we’re currently reading, do dramatic readings from the best and worst nerd literature, talk with notable geek authors, and discuss a book we’ve read along with the community.
It's been an obscene amount of time since we cracked open Book Club, but neither hell, nor high water, nor the waning attention spans of modern man can hold us back from our quest for enthralling brain-pictures. Join Cap, Colin, Brandon, and Denika as they share what they read during our long absence and we discuss our community read-along: Neil Gaiman's grim fairytale, The Ocean at the End of the Lane.
Explore the dark truths of Denika's late night reading, Colin's frustrations with Earthsea, and a true story of a sexual awakening from The Shaggy Dog while growing up raised by early 20th century pseudoscience. Then, indulge in an exhilarating reading from read the Gooflumps classic, Stay Out of The Bathroom. And finally wander into the haunting and beautiful world of our featured book with a spoiler-free discussion (and a safely quarantined spoilerific one at the end) as well as a dramatic reading. What's the difference between mythic fiction, magical realism, and other arbitrary literary genres? Discover the answers (or not) within!

Episode 15 :: Read-Along: The Handmaid's Tale
01:01:24|This episode is dedicated entirely to Margaret Atwood's landmark dystopian novel, The Handmaid's Tale. It's a horrifying story that gets closer to reality with each passing day - in which America has been overthrown by religious fundamentalists and anyone not male, white, and heterosexual is killed or subjugated. We experience this awful reality through the eyes of a woman trapped in sexual servitude; her existence reduced to being a walking womb to compensate for the future's low birth rate. Join Cap, Denika, Jess, and Brandon for an overview of the novel, a dramatic reading, and then spoiler-intensive discussions on both the book and the recent television adaptation. We discuss the challenges of the world, and the narrative itself, as well as the novel's massive cultural impact, parallels in our own reality, and even manage to make some jokes to soften the blow of how hard this book hits. 41:19|As we brace ourselves for our forthcoming dissection of the disturbingly relevant Handmaid's Tale, we first divert into greener and more peculiar pastures by talking about the other things we've read. Join Cap, Denika, Brandon, and Jess as they unload on a wide expanse of literary explorations. Discover a genre specifically about faeries being dicks, explore the world of video game translation and The Legend of Zelda to a point of fascinating minutia, learn what's the opposite of Death Note, and gird your loins for the Funky Pickle. 02:00:13|From the pages of Nerdy Show – it’s Nerdy Show Book Club! In these literary episodes, we share the books we’re currently reading, do dramatic readings from the best and worst nerd literature, talk with notable geek authors, and discuss a book we’ve read along with the community. When you consume a ton of media, it's inevitable that you'll come face-to-face with some tentacle-waving garbage monster of obscure pop culture. The question is: is it bad bad or good bad? Will you find surprising brilliance to unnecessary direct-to-video sequels of classic films? Can a blatant sampling of the best-known sci-fi media of the past 30 years provide a fresh perspective? Real monkey/ typewriter/ Shakespeare kinda stuff. Join Cap, Colin, Denika, and Brandon as they plummet into the recesses of the pop culture garbage hole: an inevitably frequent stopover for any nerd with a media addiction. Our Read-Along Book for this episode is Ready Player One author, Ernest Cline's Armada. Can this modern day retelling of The Last Starfighter (and many other nerd staples) stand aside his dazzling debut? We also dabble in dystopian fiction, discuss the metaphysics of simulation theory as told by a thought-form entity, and read from a young reader adaptation of Mortal Kombat: the movie. 02:09:17|If you grew up in the 90s, chances are you read some Animorphs. Join Cap, Colin, Brandon, and Tony as we hit the road with an insane cast of characters including a lovable environmental terrorist, a barbie-fondling ex-drug dealer, a Governor turned avenging-nomad, a hit man with some very special mix tapes… and that only scratches the surface! 02:05:04|In this episode of Nerdy Show Book Club we take on a nerdy novel classic William Gibson’s Neuromancer. Thirty years ago this novel redefined science fiction, and to this day it continues to indelibly influence… just about everything. Including your day-to-day life! This is the kernel from which all of cyberpunk exploded and infected the world’s psyche with digital consciousness. It’s a must read. …And none of us had read it. So we’ve fixed that and hopefully you’ve joined us as we plunged headfirst into the Sprawl. We share our thoughts on this landmark novel and its complex worldbuilding, discuss what you thought about the book, share what else we’ve been reading, and, of course, do a dramatic reading from Neuromancer as well as a reading from a film novelization.
