Movember: In The Barber Chair
Allan’s Story
•
This is the second in a series of episodes of Movember Radio raising awareness in the lead up to World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th with the powerful message of “Men, let’s talk when things get tough”. We talk to Mo Bro Allan Sparkes CV, a decorated police officer and one of only five Australian heroes to be awarded the highest bravery decoration, the Cross of Valour. Through Al’s service he developed chronic post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated chronic depression and became suicidal. He spent a lot of time recovering from these illnesses. Al has been an ambassador for beyondblue and Soldier On for the past three years and regularly speaks about suicide and mental health. His Twitter handle is @allansparkes.
