I stayed overnight at The Lizzie Borden House, learning more about the Borden murders and trying to connect with the spirits of the house. This house seriously lived up its reputation of being haunted; I did not know what I was getting myself into when I booked Andrew and Abby's former bedroom for the night. In January 1892, a 19-year old named Mercy Brown was lost to an illness, now understood to be consumption. Her death remains the most documented case of the New England Vampire Panic: a wave of religious and spiritual hysteria in response to an outbreak of tuberculosis. As we continue exploring the hauntings of New England, I wanted to take a step back to tell you about an experience I had in Salem a few years ago. An experience that truly changed my life, and has been a reference point in my journey with spirituality, the paranormal, and grief.
