Just a Bunch of Random Nonsense

Chris and Buck are back with another episode of Matters Not, and this one lives up to its name. What starts with a conversation about installing a security system quickly turns into a discussion about porch pirates, package theft, homelessness, rising rent, cheap clothes, questionable panhandlers, social media algorithms, content creation, West Virginia, data centers, capitalism, mining, environmental responsibility, caveman survival, modern medicine, Chinese buffets, and somehow karaoke.

The guys talk about the strange line between having empathy for people struggling and becoming skeptical when they feel like someone is taking advantage of that empathy. That leads into a bigger conversation about the rising cost of housing and whether people are being pushed into a cycle where owning a home becomes increasingly out of reach.

From there, the conversation takes a hard turn toward social media and the pressure to chase whatever the algorithm rewards. Chris and Buck question whether creators are sacrificing authenticity by copying viral trends and whether the promise of going viral has essentially turned content creation into a giant video game. They compare that mentality to their own podcast and explain why they would rather sit down, bullshit, and be themselves than manufacture a storyline just because somebody else found a way to make money from it.

The discussion eventually moves into West Virginia and the complicated relationship between economic development and protecting local communities. They debate data centers, industry, environmental concerns, jobs, outside investment, coal mining, business ownership, and where the responsibility of making money ends and responsibility to the community begins. Neither one claims to have all the answers, which is probably the most Matters Not part of the entire conversation.

And because no episode can stay serious for too long, they eventually wander into cavemen, hygiene, modern medicine, apocalypse scenarios, getting old, sweating their asses off at Dave & Buster's, competition, stage fright, karaoke, and the uncomfortable realization that Buck may have been living under the delusion that he can actually sing.

In other words, it's exactly what the title promises, a bunch of random nonsense that somehow turns into conversations about life, money, people, society, and why the hell everyone is so obsessed with going viral.

  • College VS Blue Collar

    01:02:46|
Chris and Buck sit down for another wide-ranging conversation that starts with beer, aging, and the changing ways they look at drinking before unexpectedly turning into a deeper discussion about college, blue-collar work, career choices, and what it actually takes to build a good life.A chance encounter with a delivery driver who earned a master's degree in medical cannabis science and therapy sparks the biggest conversation of the episode. Despite spending six years in higher education, the driver is struggling to find work in his field and is currently working a job he hates simply to deal with his student loans. That leads Chris and Buck to question the traditional idea that college is automatically the best path to financial success. The two compare college careers with blue-collar opportunities, pointing out that skilled trades can sometimes provide significant income with far less time and debt invested in education. They also acknowledge that college can absolutely be worthwhile when it leads to a career with strong opportunities. The real issue, they argue, is making sure the education and debt actually make sense for the life someone wants afterward. That discussion leads into Buck's own decision to leave his longtime job. What started as a coin toss on the front porch eventually became the catalyst for Buck to walk into work, ask for more overtime, hear "no," and quit without having another job lined up. The guys reflect on how a seemingly ridiculous little decision can completely change the direction of someone's life. From there, they explore the idea that major accomplishments are built from countless small actions. Buck compares it to construction work: a massive structure is ultimately the result of thousands of individual tasks, bolts, welds, and pieces being put together. The same principle applies to life, careers, and personal growth. The conversation eventually turns toward entrepreneurship and the possibility of taking the next step professionally. Chris & Buck talk about the appeal (and the downside) of owning a business, especially the inability to simply leave work behind at the end of the day. They also discuss CMD Health & Wellness, Electric Arc Solutions, and the businesses they've watched grow from the ground up.The guys also get into Buck's plans for a future trip to Vietnam, his growing TikTok presence, the bizarre comments he's received online, and the unexpected audience his videos have attracted. The episode closes with more talk about the front porch, future plans, work, staying active as they get older, and the idea that neither of them has everything figured out and maybe that's perfectly fine.
  • TikTok Famous

    01:01:40|
In this episode of Matters Not, Chris and Buck kick things off talking about video games, including the upcoming GTA 6 and the addictive nature of games like Warzone and GTA Online. The conversation quickly turns into a collection of gaming “war stories,” from ridiculous GTA Online adventures to memorable Warzone and Battlefield moments that still live in their heads years later. The guys also reminisce about the brutal online gaming culture of the past, when trash talk and toxic open lobbies were practically part of the experience. Chris talks about getting back into gaming during the pandemic, learning from Twitch streamers, and discovering just how much had changed since the days when buying a game simply meant buying a game. From there, the conversation shifts to TikTok, where Buck has unexpectedly started gaining traction after finally giving the platform a chance. A video featuring one of his projects takes off, bringing in thousands of views and hundreds of followers in only a few days. The guys discuss whether TikTok could become a better platform for showcasing Buck's projects and potentially bringing attention to the podcast.Buck also talks about the possibility of buying a camper from his boss and turning it into a project while traveling for work. The idea evolves into a bigger vision involving his Jeep, kayaking, working on the road, and eventually documenting his adventures. Chris sees the potential for Buck to turn his nomadic lifestyle and projects into content of their own.The episode also brings some big personal and business news. CMD Health & Wellness is moving from being primarily a telehealth operation toward having an actual physical location in Huntington. Chris talks about helping Maegan get the new office ready and how exciting it is to see something she has worked toward becoming a reality. The two also dive into motorcycles, including Buck's previous wreck and his complicated relationship with riding since the accident. They reminisce about riding, exploring back roads, and stumbling across an abandoned looking structure while traveling through Wayne National Forest. As always, the conversation eventually wanders into everything from entrepreneurship and success to supporting the people around you. Chris and Buck discuss jealousy, why some people have trouble celebrating other people's accomplishments, and the importance of being a “cheerleader” for people who are genuinely working to improve their lives. And, naturally, the episode ends with Chris and Buck discussing weightlifting, glute exercises, enormous heads, dwarf proportions, and Buck's goal of eventually squatting more than 500 pounds while staying under 190 pounds. It's another classic episode of Matters Not: two guys talking about gaming, business, getting older, chasing goals, and whatever the hell happens to come up along the way.
  • Buck's Big Adventure

    01:10:09|
Chris and Buck kick things off the way only Matters Not can, completely forgetting to introduce the damn podcast until roughly 30 minutes into the conversation. Before that happens, the guys bounce between music, movies, childhood memories, and the question of why some songs hit you emotionally while others are just background noise. The conversation gets surprisingly nostalgic as they talk about growing up with limited access to music, their first CDs, ICP, Sublime, Tupac, System of a Down, Sleep Token, and the songs that actually managed to mean something to them. They also revisit childhood movies and how much the entertainment world has changed since they were kids. From there, food and memories take over. Chris and Buck reminisce about Dog n Suds, Waffle House after exhausting mill shifts, scrapple, corned beef hash, and the legendary lemon meringue pie that Buck discovered during an out-of-town job. They talk about how certain meals and places become permanently attached to specific moments in your life, especially when exhaustion, camaraderie, and a hard day's work are involved. Then the real adventure begins.Buck has finally started taking steps toward making one of his long-running dreams a reality, traveling to Vietnam. After years of talking about it, he's getting his identification situation squared away, applying for a passport, and looking into an international driver's license. His inspiration comes partly from a Top Gear Vietnam special, which planted the idea of crossing the country by motorcycle and seeing the country for himself. The plan is about as Buck as it gets. He doesn't want a carefully organized tour. He wants a motorcycle, a backpack, minimal belongings, and a route from one end of Vietnam to the other. At one point, the dream even involved building a Viking longhouse there. Chris immediately starts imagining the podcast being recorded from Buck's future Vietnamese Viking longhouse. The guys also debate what kind of motorcycle Buck should ride, the possibility of renting a cruiser or Enduro-style bike, the language barrier, and how technology might make navigating a foreign country easier.Of course, Buck's confidence in spontaneous travel gets tested when the conversation turns to his recent West Virginia adventure with his kids. He admits he barely planned the trip at all. What began as a kayaking trip turned into a wandering expedition involving the Cacapon, New River Gorge, Dolly Sods, rain, fog, questionable navigation, and an unexpectedly creepy old hotel in Elkins that turned out to have once been a hospital.Chris can't help but point out the obvious, if Buck plans his Vietnam trip the same way he planned his West Virginia adventure, they may never hear from him again. But that's ultimately what makes the conversation work. The episode isn't really about having the perfect plan. It's about finally deciding to go somewhere, experience something new, and figure the rest out along the way. From childhood memories and questionable musical tastes to roadside diners, exhausting jobs, family adventures, and the possibility of riding a motorcycle across Vietnam, Buck's Big Adventure is exactly the kind of wandering conversation that Matters Not was built for.
  • I'm Gonna Pho'k You Up!

    01:16:47|
Chris and Buck are back for another episode of Matters Not, and this one goes everywhere. The episode kicks off with an unfiltered conversation about sex, pain, BDSM, and the things people are willing to do behind closed doors. From there, the conversation somehow makes its way to Myrtle Beach, where Chris talks about his vacation, the disappointing beach, spending time with the kids, and getting thrown around on roller coasters. The two also swap stories about childhood fair rides, sketchy carnival rides, house-of-mirrors trauma, and the things that seemed like a good idea when they were younger. The conversation eventually turns toward personal style, including Buck's infamous bandana, and questionable opinion of how it should be worn, homemade Mexican food, construction site lunches, and why some people take lunch a hell of a lot more seriously than others.Chris also talks about his ongoing weight loss journey, the reality of gaining some weight back after vacation, and how getting more active has changed the way he thinks about food and having fun. The guys also discuss Chris and friend of the show, Alek's trip to Old North Arcade, pinball, competitiveness, and watching their kids enjoy the experience. Then things get a little more serious as Chris and Buck talk about motorcycles, the legendary leather vest, taking risks, and the period of Buck's life when he decided to completely embrace the biker lifestyle even riding in freezing temperatures before finally admitting that maybe a Jeep was a better idea. The second half of the episode focuses heavily on Buck's house, his renovation projects, furniture, and his changing plans for the property. What originally started as an investment property intended for traveling nurses has gradually become something much more personal. The boys talk about the realization that sometimes the value of a home isn't just what it can make you financially, but what it means to you personally. The conversation eventually expands into jobs, money, future plans, real estate, and the idea of building a life where you have more control over your own time and decisions. Buck reflects on an old vision board with the goal of becoming "the King of my own world," while Chris points out just how much progress he's already made. And, naturally, none of this happens without plenty of shit talking, callbacks, questionable life choices, and completely unrelated tangents. It's another episode of Matters Not where absolutely nothing stays on topic for very long.
