Make Your Damn Bed

Day 373 || craw zaddy

•

On a recent episode of Queer Eye (Craw Zaddy) the client (Todd) said something that hit me hard: "ya know sometimes, it's too easy too exist and too hard to live." and as someone who as fully agreed with that statement at certain times in my life, I now believe it's a trap. The effort you put into LIVING will make life easier - which will in turn make it easier to exist altogether which you'll no longer want to simply do because you'll have tasted the sweet nectar of living.

You’ll never regret showing up for yourself and if you’ve been busy just existing start slow life gets better when you choose to make it better unless you get real lucky.

The reward system with effort is ten fold.

^^^Which is what I keep reminding myself over and over and over whenever I have a rough day/week/month like the one that is occurring for me currently as I realize I didn't save this episode properlly. Honestly, I am just overjoyed the majority of it did save. Tiny victories - and new (more specific and difficult) lessons learned.

luh you, Off to bed. BYEEEE.

  • 1862 || levels of neuroticism

    11:19|
    We exist on a spectrum of neuroticism. Naturally, the more self-aware you are, the more anxiety you will experience about you existence. That said, neuroticism is manageable with some intentional redirection. You can learn problem solving skills and practice mindfulness to learn how to cope with discomfort without disconnecting from ourselves completely. • 1861 || put in your 2 cents or end up 2 cents short

    12:09|
    We've been conditioned to betray ourselves at every turn, so much so that many of us don't have a clue on what we actually want or who we actually are. We have been taught to self-abandon at every angle, so we can accommodate everyone and everything around us. This self-betrayal is a false security. It's not how the world improves, but it's what we've been taught is necessary for a better world. But when we're scared to put in our two cents, we often end up two cents short. • 1860 || questioning yourself

    10:38|
    It's not a problem that you didn't know, it becomes a problem if you're not willing to update your understanding based on evidence. Ask for clarification, evidence, and be willing to challenge your assumptions to better understand your ideas. Update your ideas based on alternative viewpoints and the evidence that applies. Don't take it personally if you were previously ignorant (that's a natural part of being a human) but be willing to open your mind to new information when presented with it. You have to be willing to challenge your own assumptions. • 1859 || negative thoughts are the "fake news" of the psyche

    10:25|
    Core beliefs are our most deeply held assumptions about ourselves and the world around us. They shape our behaviors and our reality. Some need to be challenged and some just need to be ignored. Consider your automatic negative core beliefs as the "fake news" of the psyche. Fact check and challenge them when needed, and ignore what isn't worth being challenged. • 1856 || we're all hypocrites

    11:08|
    A lot of us are forced to make decisions daily that don’t align with our values. Many of us continue working for or otherwise supporting the evil corporation we wish to divest from, or we continue eating factory farmed meat despite wanting to lean into more plant based options, or we spend all day scrolling for companies we don’t want to have our data. I check social media despite knowing it will worsen my mood and overall health. I have stayed in relationships I knew were unhealthy because it felt easier than starting over. I’ve bought Temu clothes despite believing deeply in more ethical consumption. I drive a lot for someone who preaches about climate change caused by oil companies. I complain constantly about consumerism but I still end up buying shit I don’t need. I have had to vote for people I don’t agree with to avoid voting for other candidates I agree less with. I know sleep is important but I also routinely trade it for shit that isn’t. Change feels bigger than it is because humans tend to prefer what is familiar. This is sometimes called the status quo bias, and we do it for a variety of reasonable reasons. Maybe it is because we want to prevent a potential loss. Most humans tend to focus on what we have to lose, rather than what we have to gain and this keeps us tied to the “way things are” rather than branching out and trying something new. Maybe it’s the sunk cost fallacy. Our tendency to continue dumping our time, our money, and our efforts into the things we’ve already invested into, even if it’s not beneficial. Maybe it’s cognitive dissonance. Maybe it’s a combination of everything weighing on us to stay the same even when the same isn’t working.  Everyone, including myself, has gotten too comfortable “minding their business” to the detriment of society at large. And over time, the more we act in ways that doesn’t align with what we actually want and value in the world, the more depressed we get. Our decisions aren’t just impacting the world around us, but they are impacting our spirits, our minds, our beliefs. When I feel the best about myself, it’s because I’m doing as much as I can to make my spirit feel aligned with my values. I’m eating right, not just because it’s healthier, but because I have forced myself to be more conscious of the process. "We produce machines that are like men and men who are like machines." "Why is man so prone to obey and why is it so difficult for him to disobey? Practicing disobedience is not an all or nothing strategy. Do what you can when you can how you can. Anything is better than nothing. Reclaim your time where you can, especially at work. Cancel your amazon. Stop buying fast fashion. Learn to mend and sew. Do a clothing swap. Support the BDS movement. Shop local when you can. But don't be hard on yourself if you can't make these changes. Becoming more conscious is a process. It takes time.
