Make Your Damn Bed
697 || goofy ass goals
Your goals don’t always have to be productive or capitalistic or important at all. In fact, I think it’s healthy as hell to have ridiculous, goofy ass goals - just for you. If you want to watch every show or film that Melissa McCarthy has touched, set your eye on the prize, pull up that IMDB resume and write yourself up a lil bingo card. If you want to travel to every pizzeria within a 12 mile radius and rank them so you can pull out your educated suggesties at any given moment - start that list. They made a whole ass movie with Meryl Streep on this concept - you can’t tell me baking your way through Julia Child’s cookbook isn’t a silly + adorable ass goal turned side-hustle. Do you want to learn every lyric to the first Weird Al discography? Go for it.
Life doesn’t have to be a constant hustle and a good way to remind ourselves of that is to interject the challenging accomplishments with the “unnecessary” ones. You’re allowed to chase the shit that calls you - even if the thing that calls you is not deemed “lucrative” by our society. There’s something charming about finding out your accountant knows every local species of tree or your barista has been to every Marvel Movie premiere in their lifetime.
So yeah, if you know how to solve climate change but today you would rather listen to every prince album, maybe you can do a little of column A and a little of column B for the good of humanity - but if you never give yourself a chance to chase the silly shit that calls you, you’ll be less likely to accomplish the “quality” shit in good time anyway.
Let yourself enjoy the spice of life, even if the spice you choose doesn’t sound good to people who don’t have your refined palate.
When we give ourselves the space to enjoy the goofy shit, we get better at enjoying the not so goofy shit.

1705 || stop running from the feeling
09:24|The source: Feel your feelings"This zine is all about why it’s important to cultivate the capacity to stay with our feelings, and how we can go about doing that. Hopefully working through the zine will help you to figure out your own emotional landscape (which feelings you tend to prefer, and which you tend to avoid). It’ll also give you several possible practices for learning to stay with your feelings. 1700 || beg change from a world that needs some
12:12|title credit: Alkaline Trio or read today's episode, here.The only thing that has helped me to stop doom scrolling was remembering that worst people in the world want me to doom scroll.We've become inundated and confused and overwhelmed and scared. And that's by design.They're banking on us disconnecting. They've invested a lot in forcing us to tap out. I don't like people telling me what to do and how to think. You're gonna buy in sometimes, but when you realize it? Resist that shit as hard as you can.Action is the remedy to hopelessness. Hope is a verb.Someone once said, if you’re scared to lose your life you already have, and that stuck with me.If we want real change in the long term? That requires us to be comfortable changing something now.Things don’t change unless I do, and if I’m being honest with myself? It’s beyond time for a few changes.Future Hope: https://transitionnetwork.org/Read Julie's Medium Blog.SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!)DONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund AND THE Sudan Relief FundGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBESUBSCRIBE FOR BONUS CONTENT ON PATREON.The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1698 || PRIMING || dynamic pricing
09:30|What is the most you'd pay for lunch? What about baby formula? What about an uber home when your battery is on 1%? Those numbers will be different depending on your mood, location, and personality. Dynamic Pricing is a way for companies to exploit us out of the most possible money, by creating a personalized "profile" they can use to manipulate you into more profits. This is a form of priming that we all need to pay attention to. Watch: RONAN FARROW ON DYNAMIC PRICING. “The world makes much less sense than you think. 1697 || PRIMING || the different forms
11:28|How do you naturally prime yourself for your day? Brushing your teeth to feel refreshed, playing hype music to get in a better mood, opening windows to let in fresh air. These are all forms of priming that affect how our mind feels going into things. We associate familiarity with ease. What do we do when people use priming with negative intentions?"Start by cultivating environmental awareness. Look around your workspace, your living room, and your digital feeds. What are they priming you for? Does your phone's home screen, filled with news and social media apps, prime you for distraction and outrage? Does your desk, cluttered with unfinished tasks, prime you for anxiety? You have the power to curate your environment." - madeupmind.org “The world makes much less sense than you think.
