Make Your Damn Bed
1846 || integrate the shadows
We all love the idea of a redemption arc. We love the idea of hitting rock bottom and bouncing up and transforming into a confident, powerful badass permanently. As humans, we tend to see things in black and white, before and after, cut and dry. But it’s important to remember that no timeline or journey or arc is linear.
Unfortunately life, and healing, is a messy process. Unfortunately it is not something you can win or lose, but instead relies on a perspective shift that allows compassion and integration to be able to react better, not perfectly.
Prioritizing yourself (after years of not) might piss off the people around you who are used to you self sacrificing for them. This transition period will be uncomfortable for them and you. Adjust anyway.
Again, I’m not saying to be mean or neglectful but you must learn to set some actual boundaries, and start to take yourself and your own capacity into consideration, and stop abandoning yourself in order to take care of everyone else. When you do this, with enough time and practice, you’ll be teaching others that they are capable of taking some of the burden they’d offloaded onto you. And you’ll be teaching your own nervous system you are safe and someone who can be trusted. Correcting those who criticize or dislike or misunderstand you cannot become the priority. You have to build your tolerance for unpopularity.
Now admittedly, I initially had some hesitation to say embrace your “villain” era because I don’t want anyone who is already evil to feel empowered to be more evil, but I do truly believe that there is a select few of us human beings who need to be explicitly taught how to prioritize ourselves, which means we need to unlearn some of the ingrained habits that make us feel like we HAVE to be “good” a the expense of what is actually fair and right. So the villain I’m speaking about is not the type of villain that will harm others to get ahead, but instead the type of villain that realizes the power in prioritizing their needs so they can get back to elevating the collective needs of the world around them. I’m speaking specifically to those people who’s empathy for other people has become such an inherent part of their identity that they’ve forgotten their own humanity in the process.
The idea is to integrate the parts of ourselves we’ve blocked out so we can become whole. Integration is the goal, instead of leaning into the tendency to neglect certain aspects and label them as undesirable.

1877 || unproductive and still worthy
10:14|Capitalism has shaped our economies, our politics, and our emotional psychology. A society that puts profits > people will trickle down into our own personal value systems. We will never feel worthy in a culture that only focuses on profit motives. It's time we reshape our social values and the way that we think. 1876 || the cost of living is killing yourself to stay alive
11:00|Capitalism has turned the natural, balancing, grounding act of creation into just another way to make money. It’s turned every feeling into a hostile takeover of our money making potential. And capitalism exploits our emotions in so many ways to keep us from resisting it. It demands our isolation. We drive in our personal little boxes to our personal little boxes at work where we spend every hour of daylight working on a little box, before coming home to our little box and eating from a little box before laying on a little box to return to the same boxes tomorrow. This isolation keeps us alienated. This means everyone is suffering, but we are forced to suffer alone. This isolation becomes internalized and we blame ourselves for it. We have no energy to revolt or change anything. We don’t even have energy to reach out to people we love. The only energy we have is for survival, which means we have to continue putting every ounce of ourselves into our labor and productivity. All we have left is our labor, which means there’s no energy left to fight the people exploiting it. The “cost of living” is killing yourself to barely stay alive. Our physical and emotional vitality is tied to our creativity and passion, but these too, have been coopted by a society that puts value only on economics. Capitalism worked hard to keep us from ourselves. Our politicians use emotional agitation and manipulation to keep us compliant and/or defeated. We’re forced to stay in the role of the laborer. And because they’ve designed the system to keep us isolated no matter how bleak it gets, we have no appropriate outlets to release this emotional weight. Most people have no idea how to even identify their emotions let alone process them effectively, so we end up blaming ourselves for having them. We see everyone else in their boxes and we assume they’re doing just fine and we blame ourselves for being “broken” or unable to keep up. We internalize the shame and pain instead of externalizing it, which is part of the cycle that keeps the pain coming. What we don’t realize is that everyone of us who labors or works for a paycheck is struggling in some capacity. We are lonely, terrified, and defeated. We’ve been convinced we can “win” and “catch up” if we just keep our head down and work hard. But productivity is up and profits are up, but wages are down and as a result, so is hope. We blame ourselves for being human and we hide in shame when we feel any emotions. The problem is, nobody can keep up. If you love urself, you can rest without shame, and the shareholders cannot make a profit on that. If you love yourself you won’t buy endless products thinking the next one is gonna be the one to help you get your shit together finally, and shareholders can’t profit off of that. Shareholders have manufactured self-loathing and shame in each of us, much to their benefit. Reclaim your emotions. Reclaim "unproductive" output. Reclaim connection. Do the work to push back against the people exploiting us. 1875 || emotions are rational, actually
11:00|We have been conditioned to believe emotions are irrational, feminine, and something to be suppressed. But rationality and emotionality are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are intertwined. Without emotions, we would not have any motivation towards rationality. Our assumption that emotions are irrational tends to refer to our reactions to the emotion, rather than the emotion itself. Rationality is not emotionless. Emotions are not completely irrational. 1874 || rights don't actually exist
09:48|Rights are social agreements. If they can be taken away by the "higher power" at any time, they are not "rights" they are privileges. What constitutes a right changes over time. So, we must fight for and defend the rights of EVERYONE, ALL THE TIME. THEY ARE ONLY MEANINGFUL BECAUSE WE GIVE THEM MEANING. 1872 || socialized emotion
10:41|The expression of our emotions, the value we put on them, and how we're affected by them is dependent on how we're socialized. 1871 || emotions are manufactured
08:55|Emotions feel so internally important, but they are actually impacted by so much more than my personal experience. Our society manipulates our emotions and exploits us through them. https://www.saranahmed.com/books-1/https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/this-is-america/202603/how-social-cultural-and-political-structures-influence-our-feelingshttps://medium.com/@v_bhagya/the-politics-of-feeling-how-emotions-move-shape-and-control-us-51e5627a7e1fhttps://brianneradke.wordpress.com/2016/10/05/ahmed-sara-the-cultural-politics-of-emotion-introduction-feel-your-way/Support the BDS movement.organize clothing swaps with your friends.Get free resources from Annas Archive.Join your local DSABecome a READING PARTNERRead Julie's Medium Blog.Support JULIE (and the show!)Support + get some bonus stuff over on PATREON.Get an occasional personal email from me: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTune in on INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBE or TIKTOK.Info on War Tax Resistance.Donate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund and the Sudan Relief FundThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1870 || when our emotions aren't ours
11:25|Our emotional states are heavily influenced by the stories we hear, but we tend to forget the narrative and only remember the "feelings". This means we can be influenced by stories that are completely made up. So, we can easily adopt feelings that aren't rooted in reality, but feel so real to us (the feeler), that we start to believe these feelings are facts. Emotions are movable. They connect us to "this and that". They move us, connect us, attach us, and transform us. We have the feelings, but erase the history of the feeling so that the feeling feels natural, and the story becomes irrelevant. This is how people can become emotionally attached to their own subordination. Norms appear through the concealment of repetition.https://www.saranahmed.com/books-1/https://pratiquesdhospitalite.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/245435211-sara-ahmed-the-cultural-politics-of-emotion.pdfhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cultural_Politics_of_EmotionSupport the BDS movement.organize clothing swaps with your friends.Get free resources from Annas Archive.Join your local DSABecome a READING PARTNERRead Julie's Medium Blog.Support JULIE (and the show!)Support + get some bonus stuff over on PATREON.Get an occasional personal email from me: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTune in on INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBE or TIKTOK.Info on War Tax Resistance.Donate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund and the Sudan Relief FundThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only.
