Make Your Damn Bed
1678 || humane tech is out there
The six tenets of humane technology are:
- Sensitive to Human Nature: Technology should work in harmony with human vulnerabilities and biases, rather than exploiting them to grab attention.
- Minimize Harmful Consequences: Product teams must account for and minimize the negative, unintended, or downstream consequences of their technology.
- Center on Values: Technology should be designed to support human values (such as truth, connection, and well-being) rather than simply maximizing for engagement metrics.
- Create Shared Understanding: Technology should foster trust, truth, and the shared understanding necessary for functioning democracies, rather than creating fragmented realities.
- Support Fairness & Justice: Systems should promote a more just world by actively reducing bias and integrating the voices of people who experience harm.
- Help People Thrive: Products should be designed to empower users to act in alignment with their deeper, long-term intentions, rather than exploiting short-term impulses.
Visit the Humane Tech Website and check out their public discourse.
The Khan Academy offers free courses and today I sped through their lesson on "persuasive technology" and how we can push back against it, to reclaim what is ours.

1684 || they're watching all of us
13:24|The churches aren't safe, the schools aren't safe, the streets aren't safe. The government is running a terrorist organization making our streets volatile and terrifying. The federal government is using their overreach to spy on you and me, so they can more easily kidnap innocent human beings. Though the full impact of the technology is still being assessed, its usage and reach are expanding rapidly. Without safeguards, these tools risk deepening mistrust in public institutions and further alienating vulnerable families.Today we talk about the harm in that, tomorrow we'll talk about what we can do about it. 1683 || who polices the police?
12:04|Who the hell is ICE hiring? What if the enforcers of the law are the ones who break it? Who polices the police? ONLY 5% of those detained by ICE have a violent conviction, 73% never had a single conviction in their life. Yet, ICE is constantly hiring criminals who don't pass basic background checks.Read about Deportation Industrial Complex from Brennan Law Center.Read the Slate article about getting hired by ICE with ease. 1682 || ICE + the depravity of undermining democracy
11:36|(content warning: sexual violence) ONLY 5% of those detained by ice have a violent conviction, 73% never had a damned Conviction in their life, and those that did have prior convictions, a majority of those were traffic + paperwork issues, because they WERE on the damned books, and trying to immigrate legally when the government went and changed the rules on them. In episode 1344, I debunked some immigration myths, in 1345 I shared some resources about the rights that immigrants have in this country, and as much as I would like to never talk about these assholes again, it feels like it’s past time to talk about the nightmare in the room. ICE itself. FACTS:Olivia Rodrigo is older than ICE.When ICE was founded they were given 3 billion of our tax dollars annually. This year they are promised 42 billion* of our tax dollars. *According to DHS they’ll be using $170 billion over next 4 years (170/4) **+ for context what we could do with that much money? Ending WORLD hunger is estimated to cost just $93 billion a year and were spending $170 billion on an agency that has been around less time than Kelly Clarkson’s has been an American Idol.Between January 1 and January 13th of this year - that’s not even TWO WEEKS, there have been 26 cases of violent misconducts DURING RAIDS ALONE that have been VERIFIED and reported by the people who are actively funding said raids. They are unregulated and violent, so there are many crimes going without acknowledgement. Last year was the deadliest year on record for ICE, yet it was also their most profitable.The AP recently reported that ICE officers have been given permission to enter homes without a warrant.Know your rights:Defend yourself against ICE raidsICE in your area. 1680 || morals over metrics
09:42|Access the original source.We often treat metrics like a mission, which leads us to focus on the wrong things. Leaving our values behind in exchange for numbers on a screen. This can lead us to abandon ourselves and our values more and more, until we've actually become our own worst enemy.We must be careful what we wish for and pay attention to how we are measuring success.How has our creativity and our communication been affected by our current tech? Auto-correct, autofill, and autosort takes control from us. It changes how we show up in the world. 1677 || when the system is the problem
11:25|How do we fight the very system we’re stuck in? If every road we end up on bottlenecks to the same hole they want us stuck in, should we even bother?There’s a place for all of us in the systemic fight, and it’s a matter of filling needs that you can fill, as they arise. Some of us will need to stay in the bottle, but we can keep flooding the neck of the bottle from the inside, and because it’s already showing signs of cracking - we should never let up until it does. But some people hate the damned bottle, and will find they are best used outside of the bottle, throwing rocks at the facade to show how fallible it is. Some of us will have escaped the bottle already and be creating new, more connected and expansive roads for when the bottle shatters and we all need a new path, and some of us will be stuck, in the bottom of the bottle, waiting for the glass shards to fall and bury them, or for someone outside to pull them. Find a place for yourself. Building new roads, or breaking the bottle neck that has been causing so much harm. It’s impossible to see your own issues when you’re in them. If you’re stuck in the abusive system you’re not likely to see how abusive it is until you’ve escaped it.You have to back up to see the whole picture. Your nose is on the wall, back up a few steps and you’ll see how big and broken the wall is. When we see how other systems are working, it becomes clear all the ways ours isn’t. 1676 || the other half of the battle
11:17|Knowing is half the battle, but what about the other half?We'll never be free of all bias, perception, and susceptibility to manipulation. It feels like we should be able to control what we understand, but unfortunately that's not the case. As we learn consequences in real time, we have to be willing to recognize our personal vulnerabilities so we can avoid being exploited by persuasive technologies who don't have our best interest in mind. The Khan Academy offers free courses and today I sped through their lesson on "persuasive technology" and how we can push back against it, to reclaim what is ours.Read episode scripts on Julie's Medium Blog.SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!)DONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund AND THE Sudan Relief FundGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBESUBSCRIBE FOR BONUS CONTENT ON PATREON.The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only.
