1271 || final thoughts on hope for cynics || patreon

"Cynicism is a tool of the status quo." - Jamil Zaki

"Billions of us are taught that life is a battle where winners take all and losers are everywhere. Our trust and hope are mocked as naive. By now,you know better. You can stay skeptical and avoid knee-jerk assumptions about people. You can remember that the media warps our view of one another and look for better data. Most of all, you can realize that hope is not a weakness, but a path to being less wrong and more effective. We can use that hope, like a divining rod, to locate others who want thesame things we do, building solidarity and common cause." - Jamil Zaki

  • 1296 || what's really getting me through it

    09:27|
    Here are some things that helped me survive lately: Thinking of rest and joy as resistance. Intentional rest and joy are essential to the whole thing. When I start to have a little shame spiral about feeling a little bit of joy or hope or when I start to feel guilty about needing a break or rest — I remind myself that some weirdo want’s me to feel that way so that I get tired and give up — and I try to let myself move (or not move) with a little more grace. Reminding myself to slow down.I have never not been in a rush. I sometimes notice I’m rushing for nothing only to realize my heart is racing and I’m breathing like I ran a marathon. Plus, lately I’ve been cooking and baking more and that shit is dangerous (and devastating) if you mess up. So, slowing down is a good idea in general. I’ve been doing a lot more “music + ambience” on youtube, and it’s been a game changer for my focus while working, writing, or cooking. Allowing myself to feel shit as it comes up.Basically, I’ve been crying a lot, panicking sometimes, and then fully ready to stress clean or stress cook or stress bake until I can muster up the energy to face life again — and instead of shaming myself about it and feeling worse, I’ve been trying to respond with patience and compassion instead. And who would’ve thought? It helps.Taking action + reclaiming a sense of control. So when I’m feeling like I’m overwhelmed with the world or angry with the world, I remember that I’m not alone in that anger and the best place to put it is to use. There are people already creating the future that we want. There are people who want the same things I do from humanity and they are all around me, all the time but I can’t see them because they’re busy doing shit to make it happen. The sooner I seek out the people already involved in the work, the sooner I can put a hand or two in it, as well. And sure, I can’t do everything, but that sure as shit doesn’t mean I shouldn’t do anything. And doing anything, starts with something. DONATE: www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. • 1295 || coping tools vs. weapons

    09:30|
    If we look at our coping mechanisms at face value, it can add to the stress that we’re attempting to take away. It can feel like a bandaid for a symptom rather than a direct address to the roots of the problem. But not everything can be a full uprooting of systemic damages. Sometimes, effective coping is about surviving the moment. So let’s lump all of the coping strategies I listed (and any others you can think of), and see them for what they really are: survival tools. They are tools to help us survive. They are strategies to protect our health internal and external in literally any way that our brain possibly can. So they are morally neutral. Not bad, not good. A hammer can be a valuable tool or a dangerous weapon, depending on how it’s yielded. So check your tools, sure, but also don’t be afraid to check in with your wielding strategies, too. • 1294 || a break from politics

    06:42|
    Listen, we’ve gotten pretty political over the past month, and I wanted to defend my reasoning for the seasoning before I talk about why I wanna switch it up a bit. Unfortunately life is political. Not addressing the elephant in the room doesn't remove the elephant from the room.  And I wish more than anything we lived in a society where we didn’t have to talk about the ways the systems impact us and everything around us. That said, I never want to push anyone away from radical solidarity and community action. So, we're mixing it up over the next season of the podcast and we're gonna start infusing some neuroscience, psychology, art, friendship, and community themes back into the regular rotation so we can keep our momentum sustainably!
