351. Lisa Bronner - An unlikely (and awesome!) green cleaning hero

Ep. 351

Not a huge fan of cleaning? Lisa Bronner is the granddaughter of Dr Bronner and guess what? Cleaning wasn’t always her thing - even being a part of the Dr Bronner’s soap family wasn’t her thing - that all came later and even now, it’s more a necessity and taking pleasure in a lovely environment than it is in loving cleaning. Lisa is joining me for the first time since the show began 8 years ago now, as we talk through a bit of super-interesting Dr Bronner history, Lisa’s childhood, becoming a parent and discovering low tox cleaning, and then taking the stage as the Green Cleaning guru that many people know her as (if you don’t follow her on Facebook you should - always sharing helpful tips and recipes!). She also has a wonderful book out now and for pre-order depending on where you are in the world, called “Soap & Soul”.

  • 393. 393. The Undeniable benefits of Rite of Passages, with Dr Arne Rubinstein

    01:06:56||Ep. 393
    What a rite of passage should be: A powerful graduation into a new phase of life - something one grows into and is supported into during the transition. What they often are instead because we lack proper rites of passage?A piss up for your 18th or 21st with gloating about who got the drunkestA sexual encounter you might not feel ready for but ‘all your friends have’ and you’re X age now, so you feel you have to or should want to. Depression or anxiety because of a lack of support into a new chapter (adulthood, parenthood, elder life). As a couple of examples… This week, we talk about how long-standing community GP Dr Arne Rubinstein started noticing his patients were suffering all sorts of unhealthy situations in their lives. Many of them stemmed from a lack of solid grounding and really getting to ‘grow up’ properly or enter new phases in life. They lacked recognition, transition, and community support. Arne founded the Rites of Passage Institute as a result and for 3 decades has now been taking groups around the world through programs to reintroduce this vital acknowledgement of growth and ceremony and honouring into our lives and the world is better for his work. I hope you love this conversation as much as I did hosting it. You won’t leave without a thought or two very much provoked, that much I can promise you. Connect with Arne and his team’s work at the Rites of Passage Institute to learn more. Head to the shownotes on lowtoxlife.com/podcast to download the resources - Golden Check In and 7 Parenting Strategies. Thank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@waterscofilters 12% off all new systems from Waters Co for the month of August till September 15 - CODE LOWTOXLIFE - A market-leading filter solution for every budget - not just taking hte bad stuff out, but putting all the good minerals IN for optimal hydration. • 391. 391. Carl Honoré: The cult of youth is ripe for a shift - An important conversation at all ages.

    01:03:56||Ep. 391
    Pop Quiz: How do you feel about aging? Do you feel bad about your age? Wish you were younger? Go to serious lengths to come across as younger? Did you turn 32 AGAIN this year? This week’s show, @carlhonore invites us to stop buying into the cult of youth, and explore what the world might look like when we do. If you’d love nothing more than to change the way you view ageing, change the things you say about age, brush off the pressure to be ‘young’ then join us. Words like vitality, energy, enthusiasm, vibrancy and ‘crushing it’ don’t belong to any age - they belong to the people who embody them at any age. Carl has always made us think through his books, and challenge how we think about and do things. In Praise of Slow, challenged Hustle Culture; his book “Bolder” in 2018 challenges us to rethink aging and the notion that at a certain point we should be put out to pasture. I know you’ll love this chat. So good. Can’t wait to hear what ahas come from it for you. • 390. 390. Somatics: how to make your journey real and true with Irene Lyon, MSc.

    01:33:14||Ep. 390
    Nervous system, somatics and what true regulation means. We go there again with a brilliant practitioner. It’s a biggy this week. It’s going to be a cause for reflection and compassion for many of us, I think! I wanted to have @irenelyon on the show because I’ve become concerned myself about AI and the impact on education online - models hired to demo a few ‘easy exercises’ to regulate system and modules churned out by computers, funnels built by bots and everything geared to algorithm eye catching… it’s the Wild West out there and we’re playing with humans who actually need support. What people ‘think’ doing work to regulate the system might have gone through to need it: WarPhysical or mental abuseDifficult experiences around big moves, big illnesses, bullyingCrime or violence committing, “troubled youth”.What experiences also can mean regulation work can be neededIllness, surgery, difficult birthsContact sportsShaming or being in the care of “overreacting adults” as a childBeing left to cry oneself to sleep as a babyHead trauma such as a fall/hitting head Break ups, grief, job lossAnd the list goes on! We unpack the many ways to know if you’re connecting with a good person/platform to work with - how to spot ‘quick fixing red flags on the internet’ and then some of the common situations where people go through every possible treatment for whatever it is they’re experiencing as adults, only to find it stems from dysregulation. I hope you love the show as much as I love bringing this one to you, Alexx xThank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@koalaeco gives you 25% off all of July CODE: LOWTOXLIFE. • 389. 389. Metabolism: It’s time to retire the “willpower” message and understand the person, says Lara Briden

    You know what’s in this week’s show on metabolic health? YOU ARE. No one is left behind in Lara’s book “The Metabolic Reset” which just came out, nor is anyone left behind on this week’s show where we explore these and so much more:Sleep, circadian rhythms and individuality within thatStruggling to achieve ‘satiety’ after meals and how food is the OPPOSITE of ‘one way for all’!How a deep sense of safety and relaxation are gold for metabolic functionNot achieving the results the online guru with the protocol is talking about and feeling like you are the problem - AGAIN! Favourite hacks, tips and things to explore along your way after Lara’s decades of research and clinical practice.And we also talk about culture, societal pressures and messages, evolution - like my survival superpower of seriously good fat storage skills for tough times 😂and Lara’s checkered history with sleep 😴It’s real talk. • 388. 388. Alexx Stuart, Low Tox Life founder, shares 10 common situations that can be tricky with getting your people on board the low tox train and how to navigate them: Part 1

    01:04:19||Ep. 388
    Have you ever felt super passionate about making a change for people or planet in the low tox sphere, only for it to land like a lead brick with your kids, partner, family or friends?Maybe you’ve joined groups, watched documentaries, and read books, and you can’t understand why people aren’t excited? Maybe your family members think you’re overreacting, or an annoying parent/partner just wanting to buy lots of things we don’t need or trying to make everyone do more in an already busy day? Or making up problems when you could "paint over it" (hellooooo mould remediation discussions!).  Whatever it is, in this week’s show, I tackle the first 10 of 20 of the most common objections from family members across all low tox topics and how to make a case for change! The next 10 will be in Part 2 soon. The 10 situations in Part 1 are:Kids with friends obsessed with a certain drink bottleA teen in the cool gang and the gang are starting to vape or use synthetic fragrance sprays. Little Kid starting to get fussy about food once they see how/what other kids eatNarrow diet - encouraging broader variety in kids!Teens and microtrendsPersonal care/hygiene with teensThen at home...Getting new appliances - generalJustifying dehumidifiers/air filtersNon Stick pan upgradesBuilding a case for maintenanceTo be continued!Today is about creating low toxic unity, not ‘annoying overreactor division’, Alexx xThank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimateIf you’re dealing with eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis, dry flaking skin or radiotherapy recovery and you haven’t yet tried @biofirstofficial - you might find your “Finally, something that works!” solution. 15% off till July 7 AUS/USA/NZ CODE: LOWTOXLIFE. https://bit.ly/3ydRS8T@koalaeco gives you 25% off all of July CODE: LOWTOXLIFE. • 387. Microbiome health and resilience building - Part 1, with microbiologist Kiran Krishnan

    01:10:06|
    What a treat this Part-1 of microbiome explanation is with @kiranbiome this week on the podcast. We explore: Different types of bacteria and their various roles in the gut, including the importance of their balance and diversity to overall well-being and resilience. The gut/immune connectionThe importance of working on growing your window of tolerance of food variety and the potential downsides of narrowing your food mix too much and for too long.  How we get to a place where because we’re resilience-focused 80% of the time, the 20% isn’t make-or-break when it comes to choices/social ‘go with the flow’ moments. (As long as we don’t start putting everything in the 20% as @livealivehq reminded us last week!! 😘)It was so detailed and thorough that we invariably only made it through half of my wishlist topics, so I’ve invited Kiran back for Part 2, where we will explore “leakiness” in the skin, brain, gut, and more in August. Enjoy the show and tag me on Instagram with your AHAs or shares @lowtoxlife Thank you to this month’s show sponsor for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@biofirstofficial for giving AUS/USA/NZ 15% off site-wide with excellent shipping rates, too, on their often life-changing range of products for the skin including a personal favourite, the Ultra sensitive skin rescue lotion. 01:18:51||Ep. 386
    Immune support and health and tips and tricks to boost ourselves this time of year with changing seasons, is common and normal to be chatting about, and of course, often very helpful. BUT. I knew when I invited my dear friend and wise sage, Shalani McCray @livealivehq who is a naturopathic nutritionist, practitioner of many years, an EFT, MAPS and GAPS practitioner, an herbalist and an ordained interfaith minister… that we wouldn’t just be talking about garlic soaked socks and vitamin D capsules, but  about fundamental common sense inputs for being WELL and robust and having the vitality to withstand common lurgies for the most part in the first place. We talk about: DietsSunshineGriefThe Nervous SystemConnection to all thingsExploring therapeutic tools we don’t need to see someone forAnd more. Come, listen and be soothed by the simple things that count BIG, Alexx xThank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate continues giving 10% off their Winix Air Purifiers, Dehumidifiers and their new energy-efficient heating range at ausclimate.com.au. • 385. 385. Exploring the lack of progress on biodiversity and conservation with author of “Wild Quests”, Satyajit Das

    01:19:00||Ep. 385
    This podcast is a big exploration of several important topics of our times (Das hates the word ‘conversation’ and shares why in the show) People feel jaded seeing injustices inflicted on people, from corporate to political to personal, without a sense of real accountability for actions taken and how that’s impacting everything from polarization to lack of success in environmental care and regeneration. The corporatisation of not-for-profits and climate change are feeding into many people’s scepticism that the policies and solutions being tabled will get us results. Wild Animals and Das’ book “Wild Quests” to help remind us what needs our attention and witness. Why “Donate $1 a day to save the Koala/Nature reserve/World” is not working. Living with our own contradictions - impossible to escape if we want to unite over what will make a difference. Das isn’t here to give people comfortable ‘off ramps’ and this was definitely a thought provoking hour exploring things we’re all often thinking about, also often despairing over the state of, and yet never moving forward and we aim to light a fire or remind us to find our overlaps and common ways to move forward. I hope you love it as much as I did, your host, AlexxThank you to this month’s show sponsor for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate continues giving 10% off their Winix Air Purifiers and Dehumidifiers at ausclimate.com.au.
