LPMM46: Martin Rev

Keyboard wizard and punk pioneer Martin Rev, (born Martin Reverby) grew up in New York where he still lives today. In his youth, he was a fan of doo wop music, and then became engrossed in the emerging jazz world that was happening around him, brushing shoulders with the likes of Thelonious Monk, Archie Shepp and Eric Dolphy, and playing in a combo called Reverend B in the late 1960s. It was in those days that he befriended a visual artist called Alan Vega, with whom he would soon form a band named Suicide. They were likely the first group to advertise their performance as “Punk Music,” back in 1971, and their influence is far-reaching. Artists who have reworked their songs include Henry Rollins, Bruce Springsteen, Neneh Cherry, M.I.A and R.E.M., among countless others. Martin Rev has also been a solo artist in his own right since, well, forever really. He joins this program to speak with Markly Morrison and Madison Nadine to talk about his formative years, expound on his creative process, wax philosophical on art in general, and set the record straight on a handful things that the well-meaning citizens of the internet got twisted.

  • Update + Unedited Interviews on Pete Drake

    03:22:57|
A new patron, Matthew Bullis, sent me an email asking if I could share the unedited interviews (all four of them) that I conducted for the very first episode of this show.  I reached out to Steve Hinson, Bill Hullett, Debbie Hullett and Johnny Drake.  I still had all of them, and here they are, in that order.  If you have any similar requests to hear the unedited versions of any other episodes, I will do my best to post them here for you! Unfortunately I have lost a small handful of unedited conversations with a few guests due to a hard drive failure last year, but most of them are still preserved.  I'm planning on putting these here in due time, but if you want to expedite the process, be more like Matthew Bullis and just shoot me an email, and I will do my best to make it happen. In further developments, I just got certified to check out video + audio equipment from the local public access cable channel, Thurston Community Media.  Season five has been about half its episodes recorded, and there will be some that have a video component.  I'll be sharing these here first as well.
  • Swamp Dogg (unedited interview)

    02:23:24|
When I spoke to Jerry Williams, AKA Swamp Dogg, he had so many stories and I knew it would be too much to cram into an episode.  So for those of you who are interested, I have posted our entire conversation! Thanks a lot for your support, it makes a big difference!  I'll be posting more of these while the show is between seasons if you want to hear more in-depth conversations, and maybe get a bit of insight into my process.  Fair warning, it's not as polished as it sounds after I've done my production tips.  This is what I listen to when I take notes and decide how the episode is going to flow, where to insert songs, etc.
