Life In The Stocks

#166 Jake Szufnarowski (Rocks Off)

Season 2, Ep. 166

Usually, when we put out episodes that are longer than 90 minutes, we split them into two parts, but we've decided to keep this one whole so you can get swept up and lost in the conversation. It's a DEEP one this week. And things get a little intense at times. But then that's what we do here on Life In The Stocks, and we hope anyone that's previously struggled or currently struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts will take something positive and inspirational away from hearing Jake's story.

Jake is one of Matt's dearest friends, and in the words of Hunter S. Thompson, is "one of God's own prototypes: too weird to live and too rare to die." This already ranks as an all-time favourite episode. There's tales from Warped Tour '97, the final days of CBGB, partying with Kid Rock, and Jake's mental breakdown, suicide attempt, and the long, hard, ultimately rewarding road to recovery. There is something for everyone in here.

Be sure to buy yourself a protective mask from Jake's insane array of designs, too. They're guaranteed to put a smile on your face - not to mention the faces of people you pass in the street. Jake also has some amazing Tiger King t-shirts for sale, too.

  • 313. #313 Joe Escalante (The Vandals)

    01:13:44
Welcome to Episode 313 of Life In The Stocks. My guest this week is Joe Escalante from The Vandals. I had the pleasure of Joe's company and friendship on the Flogging Molly Cruise last year and it felt great to welcome him onto the podcast. We talk about discovering punk rock, switching Fat Mike onto punk rock, and building a life and career out of punk rock. We discuss how the classic Vandals line-up of Joe Escalante, Dave Quackenbush, Warren Fitzgerald and Josh Freese came about, and the relationship between those four guys over the years. And Joe also works in TV & Film, and he now manages Sublime, so we get into some of that stuff as well. We even touch on faith and spirituality at the end. Happy listening.
