Life and Lessons by Sean Spooner
E58: Tom Harwood on the Secrets of British Politics, Twitter Division, Breaking News and more
Season 1, Ep. 58
•
On this week's episode of Life and Lessons, you're going to hear a conversation between me and Tom Harwood.
Tom is Senior Reporter at Guido Fawkes. If you follow political news, or you've ever seen tweets of a breaking news story unfolding in Westminster, it's likely that you've seen Tom's face.
In the next hour, you're going to learn:
- What really happens behind the scenes in British politics
- Why the pub is often the best place to be when working in political journalism
- How it feels to break a bad news story about somebody you know well, and the feelings involved just before you hit 'publish'
- What it's like the receive thousands of Twitter mentions every single day
And so much more.
I'm fairly detached from politics; for me, it's a process which occurs every few years when I step into a polling booth, and sometimes it's a sideshow to my life when I happen to watch the news. But this episode was really interesting, to hear about politics from the inside out, from somebody whose job is to be on top of the biggest stories both in and outside of parliament.
