Matt Olsen Talks Cyber Threats and the ODNI’s Latest Report
On April 29th, at the 2022 Verify Conference hosted by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Aspen Institute, journalist Aruna Viswanatha hosted a fireside chat with Matt Olsen, the Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division at the Justice Department. They discussed the report published earlier that day from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence that disclosed, for the first time, that the FBI had searched the section 702 database 3.4 million times to access information regarding U.S. persons last year. They also spoke about current cyber powers, how cyber threats have shifted in the past decade and the Justice Department’s recent efforts to go after Russian oligarchs following the invasion of Ukraine.
Vice President Harris on Establishing Norms for Space
Vice President Kamala Harris delivered an address on April 18, discussing the development and defense of international space norms. She discussed U.S. investments in space capability and addressed the issue of the testing of direct-ascent anti-satellite weapons—mentioning the destruction caused by recent missile launches from China and Russia. Harris announced that the U.S. commits not to conduct these kinds of missile tests in space and called on other nations to do the same.

The House Select Committee investigating the January 6th attack on the Capitol held a meeting on March 28th. They discussed a report recommending that the House of Representatives hold former Trump aides Peter Navarro and Daniel Scavino, Jr. in contempt of Congress for their roles in the insurrection and their refusal to comply with the investigation.
