11:04||Season 1, Ep. 5Our skin is a complex and dynamic organ and has evolved to protect us from harsh ultraviolet rays emitted from the sun. This can be seen through melanin, where people who live closer to the equator have darker skin tones and those living further north have fairer skin. This plays an important role in vitamin D and how it came to be known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’. From a foetus in the womb to infancy, through to adulthood and old age, our bones are constantly remodelling. 07:59||Season 1, Ep. 2Spanning hundreds of years before the advent of medicine, women have developed home remedies and herbal medicines to treat diseases. The knowledge of this was often passed down through recipe books and oral histories. Women would add to these from their own knowledge or what they had learnt from others. 11:52||Ep. 1As the earth rotates on its axis we draw closer and further away from the sun. Research has shown that only between April and October is there enough sunlight to make vitamin D in the UK and this is only for those with fairer skin. Those with darker skin can only make enough from sunlight if they are closer to the equator. For communities and individuals who have migrated, some forcefully displaced or enslaved, they carry with them ways of living and being to environments that their skin and bodies have not adapted to, affecting their physical and mental health. But we have always made journeys, crossing lands and oceans. Time has shown that we can carve new homes and make them our own.An arts and heritage podcast that shines a light on the sunshine Vitamin D and its all-powerful influence on and in our lives.Take a journey through the story of sunshine and Vitamin D through five different lenses - migration, food, equality, health and nature.
