Jury Duty
S10 E9: The Trial of Robert Durst — Greatest Hits: The Defense Opening and the Pandemic Hiatus
Installment 9 of The Trial of Robert Durst: Greatest Hits is The Defense Opening and the Pandemic Hiatus where we offer highlights of Season 1 Episodes 9 through 12.
Dick Deguerin and David Chesnoff split the responsibilities of delivering the defense opening, with Deguerin asserting that Durst didn’t kill Susan Berman and he doesn’t know who did and with Chesnoff reminding the jurors that the defendant is only on trial for Berman’s murder.
After the opening statements conclude, it becomes clear that the jury will have to choose between two ways of interpreting evidence: Will they be guided by Chesnoff’s mantra that “no evidence is evidence” deciding that the lack of CSI-type forensic evidence leaves them with reasonable doubt of Durst’s guilt, or will they follow Lewin’s OK Boomer Method deciding that the mess of circumstantial evidence surrounding Durst’s actions and statements and the statements of others leaves only one reasonable explanation: that Robert Durst killed Susan Berman.
And then, after two days of testimony the LA courts are shut down due to COVID-19 and the trial is suspended until next Spring. The episode concludes with a taste of the testimony that lies ahead in Season Two.

One of those new endeavors is a podcast produced by our sister company, Pleasant Run Productions. “Shadow of Hope” explores the history of the People of Hope, a Catholic Covenant Community. At their peak in the 1980s, the People of Hope took over a parish in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, clashed with local residents, and built the suburban equivalent of a compound.Over eight episodes, host Karen Ann Coburn tries to find out what led regular people – her neighbors, classmates, and friends – to commit their lives to this secretive group. In the process, she reveals the truth about life inside a Covenant Community and ponders the question, “What price are we willing to pay to belong to something bigger than ourselves?”Meanwhile, over nine seasons here at Jury Duty, we’ve covered the trials of Robert Durst, Kyle Rittenhouse, Travis and Gregory McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan (convicted for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery), former Olympic equestrian Michael Barrisone, Harvey Weinstein, Danny Masterson, OJ Simpson, and Alex Murdaugh. Over the last four and a half years, this podcast series has generated nearly five million downloads. For a more detailed and thorough overview of the work we’ve accomplished both at Jury Duty and across the Crime Story Media Endeavors, head over to our Farewell Page at CrimeStory.com.
