JYD - Ironman Austria Debrief

Ep. 10

In this honest and wide-ranging episode of the JYD Podcast, Joe Skipper opens up about his tough day at Ironman Austria. Despite solid training and a good taper, Joe felt completely empty on the bike and run. He breaks down the race from a decent non-wetsuit swim to a sluggish ride and a run that never got going. He suspects illness or the effects of altitude might be to blame and shares the frustration of doing everything right but still having it fall apart on race day.

Joined by regular guest Tom Epton, the conversation turns reflective as they discuss the emotional rollercoaster of professional sport. They talk about how rare the highs are, how common setbacks feel, and the challenge of staying motivated through it all. Joe talks about trying to reset and look ahead to Challenge Roth as a shot at redemption.

The episode also covers recent pro racing including:

Ironman Cairns where Matt Marquardt impressed with a comeback win after cramping early

70.3 Boulder with a big win for Sam Appleton and rising American Colin Szuch making waves

The T100 series where both Joe and Tom voice strong opinions about the current format. They argue for larger fields, open qualification, and fewer distractions like mid-race interviews

  • 18. JYD - Jimmy Whelan

    55:53||Ep. 18
    Joe is joined by former WorldTour pro and freshly minted 61-minute half marathoner Jimmy Whelan for a cracking deep dive into life on the limit. Jimmy talks through how he went from a talented young runner to winning the under-23 Tour of Flanders and racing Grand Tours with EF, what it is really like bombing down wet descents at 70 kilometres an hour, and why getting repeatedly taken out by crashes finally pushed him away from pro cycling.He breaks down the “devil block” weeks that built his monster engine, the difference between pure watts and fatigue resistance, and what it feels like when riders like Mathieu van der Poel and Julian Alaphilippe simply ride away from you. Then Jimmy explains how a sciatica flare-up on the TT bike nudged him back into running, the four-month build to his debut 70.3 in Geelong, and the big block that ended with a 61.30 half in Valencia where he went through 10K in 28.39 and ran with Alex Yee and the British marathon crew.Jimmy finishes by opening up on his next chapter as a full-time runner, his three-year plan toward the LA Olympics, and whether triathlon is completely off the table or still quietly in the mix.Join the JYD for exclusive members perks: patreon.com/TheJYDFind out more about Valere: tinyurl.com/valerebigdog Get 20% off your nutrition with Styrkr: https://styrkr.com/SKIPPER  To watch this podcast as a video visit: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0VKd5PFrhj-qsnWw8VVmyQOr check us out on Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/junk_yard_dogz  You can follow Joe at https://www.instagram.com/notanotheraveragejoeYou can follow Jimmy at https://www.instagram.com/jimmywhelann
  • 17. JYD - How We Train Episode 5

    38:45||Ep. 17
    Joe and Tyler are back for another episode of Junk Yard Dogs. Their last show was recorded together in person, but this time they are checking in from Arizona during the build up to Ironman Arizona. Joe is racing and Tyler is on support duty, fresh off one of the wildest three week racing stretches of his career.Tyler talks through everything that happened at Langkawi 70.3, starting with waking up feverish, losing power and aircon before the race, crashing on slippery roads while dodging a stray dog, riding completely alone for most of the bike and still running himself onto the podium in brutal heat. A week later he lines up for a World Cup in Japan with no voice and a wrecked body but still manages to swim near the front thanks to smart race awareness and open water craft.From there they dive into what is shaping the front of the sport right now. They break down the Blummenfelt versus Jelle battle at 70.3 Worlds, how depth and aerodynamics have changed racing, and whether a bigger draft zone would actually fix the pack problem. They get into training alone versus training with a squad, why some pros avoid training with each other, how much rest runners and triathletes really need in hard sessions, and how Joe would structure training if an age grouper only had ten hours a week.Join the JYD for exclusive members perks: patreon.com/TheJYDFind out more about Valere: tinyurl.com/valerebigdog Get 20% off your nutrition with Styrkr: https://styrkr.com/SKIPPER  To watch this podcast as a video visit: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0VKd5PFrhj-qsnWw8VVmyQOr check us out on Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/junk_yard_dogz  You can follow Joe at https://www.instagram.com/notanotheraveragejoeYou can follow Tyler at https://www.instagram.com/therealmislawchuk

    28:11||Ep. 16
    Joe is in Tempe getting ready to race Ironman Arizona, Tyler is on the ground as a very enthusiastic spectator, and for the first time ever they are recording together in person.In this episode, the boys give a proper pre-race low down on the final edition of Ironman Arizona, from the weird swim cancellation rules and Tempe Town Lake water testing, to who is actually favourite on paper and how Joe plans to race it. They get into how he wants to start the swim, why he is eyeing “Terminator” Rasmus Svenningsson as his golden ticket to the front, how not to overbike if you want to run under 2.40, and what result would leave Joe happy, content, or seriously disappointed. There are plenty of stories along the way, including Joe rocking up drenched to the group run, recognising half the pro field on the start line in real life for the first time, getting ghosted by Trovo Foley on a “first date” swim, and Tyler explaining why some athletes never want to train with anyone during race week.Join the JYD for exclusive members perks: patreon.com/TheJYDFind out more about Valere: tinyurl.com/valerebigdog Get 20% off your nutrition with Styrkr: https://styrkr.com/SKIPPER  To watch this podcast as a video visit: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0VKd5PFrhj-qsnWw8VVmyQOr check us out on Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/junk_yard_dogz  You can follow Joe at https://www.instagram.com/notanotheraveragejoeYou can follow Tyler at https://www.instagram.com/therealmislawchuk
  • 15. JYD - Paula Findlay

    01:12:53||Ep. 15
    Canadian star Paula Findlay joins Joe for a wide open chat that runs from her meteoric WTCS rise and the weight of London 2012 to the joy of finding her groove in middle distance racing. Paula talks about switching off the gadgets to actually feel her body, why Strava can mess with your head, and how meeting Eric Lagerstrom reshaped her approach to triathlon as a true small business. She breaks down the difference between time trial power and tri power, winning St George years apart in a faster era, and why Holly Lawrence brings the best out of her on race day. There is honest reflection on federation support when you are hot and when you are not, identity beyond results, and how COVID unexpectedly became a reset that led to Challenge Daytona glory and the birth of TTL. Paula shares Ironman plans on the horizon with an eye on Taupō, a playful case for downhill skiing as a fourth discipline, and the simple pleasure of coffee, chocolate, and quiet dog runs. Joe adds a cautionary tale about jalapeños before race day, plus a pitch for go-karts to fix bike descending. A candid, uplifting listen with plenty for pros and age-groupers alike.Join the JYD for exclusive members perks: patreon.com/TheJYDFind out more about Valere: tinyurl.com/valerebigdog Get 20% off your nutrition with Styrkr: https://styrkr.com/SKIPPER  To watch this podcast as a video visit: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0VKd5PFrhj-qsnWw8VVmyQOr check us out on Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/junk_yard_dogz  You can follow Joe at https://www.instagram.com/notanotheraveragejoeYou can follow Paula at https://www.instagram.com/paula_findlay

    44:13||Ep. 14
    Joe and Tyler reunite for an unfiltered catch up that runs from altitude life in Flagstaff to a three race swing through Australia, Malaysia and Japan. Joe revisits his chaotic first Ironman in 2012 with a two gel and peanut butter sandwich plan, and both laugh at the early days of jelly babies and Snickers on the top tube. Tyler talks through a recent crash, the grind of late season form, and the constant battle to keep weight on, while Joe recounts a family holiday in Turkey that turned into water slide warfare. They finish with a bold preview of the Kona women’s race, weighing Lucy Charles Barclay, Taylor Knibb, Kat Matthews and Laura Philipp, then lock in a friendly wager that ends with a beer mile in Arizona. • 13. JYD - How We Train Episode 2

    01:01:58||Ep. 13
    Joe catches up with Canada’s Tyler Mislawchuk after his blistering Super League run in Chicago. They unpack how team tactics shape Super League racing, why the swims get slower but harder, and how Tyler’s longer aerobic work is boosting both Super League and WTCS form. The chat veers into friendly ribbing about hairlines, weekend race plans, and then pivots to Joe’s Copenhagen tale of a great ride undone by a puncture and why he is now all-in on Nice. They trade views on descent hype at Nice, Morgan Pearson’s antics, and the steady drumbeat of doping news. The second half turns into a fun coaching thought experiment where Joe maps a Kona plan for Tyler and Tyler returns the favour with heat-prep, swim technique tweaks, and hill sprints. They wrap with favourite sessions from the last few weeks.Join the JYD for exclusive members perks: patreon.com/TheJYDFind out more about Valere: tinyurl.com/valerebigdog Get 20% off your nutrition with Styrkr: https://styrkr.com/SKIPPER  To watch this podcast as a video visit: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0VKd5PFrhj-qsnWw8VVmyQOr check us out on Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/junk_yard_dogz  You can follow Joe at https://www.instagram.com/notanotheraveragejoeYou can follow Tyler at https://www.instagram.com/therealmislawchuk
