What if there was a way to combat gender based violence? Empowerment self-defense (ESD) claims to be the way. It's a comprehensive, evidence-based, and trauma-informed approach to personal safety training. Gohar Khachatrian is a level three instructor in Armenia and breaks down the basics of ESD on this episode. She's also the co-host of Country of Dust, a podcast that tells stories of a changing Armenia, and works at Femlibrary, a feminist library in Yerevan, where we recorded our conversation. The United Nations says that almost a third of women worldwide have been subjected to physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. And that every 10 minutes, one woman or girl is killed by her intimate partner or family member. Armenia is no exception. This year alone, domestic violence cases shot up by 37%, according to the prosecutors’ office. The increase can be partly explained due to the lingering effects of war and forced displaced, but also the fact that more and more women are finding the courage to speak up and seek help.The first group to offer survivors in Armenia shelter, psychological, legal support – and most importantly, empowerment – is the Women’s Support Center.It was founded 15 years ago by executive director Maro Matosian.This episode is dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25-December 10). Armenian-American occupational therapist and PhD candidate Armineh Babikian is the founding director of Therapists for Armenia, a volunteer network working to strengthen rehabilitation and disability services through inclusive, sustainable approaches.
