Jane Holland Yak Yak Yak
ON WARWICK CASTLE: a long poem (audio)
"On Warwick is the product of Jane Holland’s year as Warwick’s Poet Laureate. It’s not unusual for local laureates to write poems about major landmarks of the area but the main poem in the collection, ‘On Warwick Castle’—described in David Morley’s foreword as Holland’s “modernist piece de resistance”—is probably one of the more ambitious works of public poetry generated through a local laureateship. " --- David Floyd, writing in Sphinx.
I was Warwick Poet Laureate (England) in 2007-8, and decided to write something epic to commemorate my tenure. So here it is! These are audio extracts.
On Warwick Castle was included in my poetry pamphlet "On Warwick" published by Nine Arches Press in 2008.
As part of my laureateship, I created this long poem 'On Warwick Castle', to celebrate the history of Warwick Castle and the people who have lived and worked within its walls, from its earliest settlement to the present day. I wanted to mix all the ages together, just jump in and out of time periods, and mingle them too. You can decide for yourselves whether or not the result is successful poetry!
Thanks for listening!

First published in paperback by Sceptre back in 1999. Here, I read an extract that came out of an inspired diary piece I wrote for the London Review of Books, entitled DIARY OF A HUSTLER. The LRB essay, by the way, was later collected in an LRB sports essay book entitled 'Anyone for gulli-danda?' "Here are ten of the best from the archives of the LRB, about tennis, football, snooker, speedboat racing, cricket, swimming, horse racing, basketball, cycling and surfing – but also so much else besides. Featuring: Tariq Ali, Gabrielle Annan, Terry Castle, Marjorie Garber, Jane Holland, Benjamin Markovits, Karl Miller, David Runciman, Amia Srinivasan and Heathcote Williams."Now for the inevitable questions ...No, I don't play snooker anymore, though I do occasionally pick up a pool cue. Yes, if you've done your research, I really did get banned for life for bringing the game into disrepute. And no, I never tell anyone why. Though perhaps if you read the novel ...
