Is This Actually Healthy?

What sources can we use to boost creativity and inspire us to prep healthier meals?

Season 1, Ep. 33

Welcome to Is This Actually Healthy, the show where we cover simple, practical topics for how to improve your eating and fitness lifestyle that you can easily take with you into the real world! It is an unfortunate fact that bringing home healthy ingredients in a grocery bag doesn't magically transform them into a delectable meal! We need to be proactive and learn to make meals that make us feel good but that we actually enjoy too. In this episode, I talk about how to avoid creativity burnout - that is, losing motivation to make healthier meals because you simply don't know what to do. Whether you are just starting to experiment with enhancing your cooking or if you're just bored with what you're eating on a daily basis now, it is time to consider the amazing range of inspirational resources we have to break the mold, including cookbooks, social media, YouTube, and more. I also provide you some tips on how to use these tools effectively.

  • 36. Do I need to take supplements? with Dr. Doug Lucas

    26:47
When it comes to supplements, knowledge seems a bit all over the place. Should we take them or should we not? If we do, which ones should we take? After all, the shelves contain hundreds, each that are supposed to help with different things. Most importantly, how do we know how to supplement responsibly and where can we go wrong when it comes to these convenient micronutrient pills? To answer all these questions I have brought on trained orthopedic surgeon and health optimization professional Dr. Doug Lucas to find out. Supplements really can be a critical component of meeting our nutrient needs, so they are worth learning about! To follow Dr. Doug on social media check out Instagram @optimal_human_health/ and at his personal website: optimalhumanhealth.com/. • 35. Online fitness training - is it for me?

    17:17
When we think about working out we usually imagine pumping iron at the gym. This may seem... intimidating for anyone who doesn't see themselves as "that gym person" or maybe there is just not enough time in the day to commute or money in the bank to afford a membership. These days, it is easier than ever to workout in your comfort zone, even if it means exercising in your own living room. The online fitness industry is booming especially post COVID, and there are options for almost any kind of workout you can think of. Whether it be on Youtube or with a personal trainer, these options are excellent for getting in your daily, much-needed exercise. My guest today is Silvia Cassi, an online fitness trainer who lives in Milano, Italy. I have been attending her classes online and in person, and she provides us with her experiences transitioning to online fitness during COVID and about all the clients she has helped during the process! You can find my guest at @silviacassifitness on Instagram! Please follow me @isthisactuallyhealthy, subscribe, and leave a rating wherever you listen!
  • 34. Breaking down eating disorders - with Athina Crilley

    35:15
It is time to cover a deep and often intimidating topic when it comes to dieting. I have brought on Athina Crilley to talk about eating disorders - They are a significant problem in today's society so what are they and how do they develop? How should we think about eating disorders and what is the way to recovery once one develops? Athina shares her own personal experience of living for nearly 8 years with anorexia, and we get really deep into the topic. You do not want to miss this exclusive interview! Even if you have never been diagnosed with an eating disorder, it is critical to recognize how mindsets around eating and exercise and negative feedback loops can actually build damaging behaviours and it is important for supporting anyone around you who may be experiencing or has experienced an eating disorder at some point in life.Check out this episode and all my others here on ACast or wherever you're streaming. • 32. What are some easy ways to increase my activity throughout the day?

    11:11
Being active does not necessarily mean "doing a workout". There are all kinds of things you can do during your day that can boost your activity levels, and some of them are healthy habits that only take a few minutes. By talking through my average work day and the habits I've built within it, I hope to give you some ideas on what you can squeeze into your day, no matter what your schedule looks like. • 31. Are plant-based products the next big thing? - with CEO Kory Zelickson

    21:58
The term "plant-based" may automatically make you think "vegan food". However, the market for plant-based products is rising exponentially as people from all kinds of backgrounds, nationalities, and dietary preferences are jumping on the bandwagon- and not just vegans. One attractive trait for these foods is that they are often healthier alternatives to their meat or dairy counterparts, so why not try to add more veggie-based products to our diets that are absolutely delicious? Today I am talking with Kory Zelickson who is the creator of oshopvejii.com: an online Amazon-like platform where you can shop for vegan products and get them shipped straight to your door! We talk about what plant-based products are, how they are taking shape in today's supermarkets and online shopping platforms, and why to consider them as a part of your diet. • 30. Is coffee good for you? - my take on the best-selling book

    13:24
For this episode, I am doing something a bit different. I have read a fascinating book recently, written by Dr. Robert Davis, who you may remember from episodes 17-18 of this show when we discussed the book Supersized Lies. Robert Davis is an accredited health journalist who takes on the challenge of busting nutritional myths, and his book Coffee is Good for You is another must-read! I devoured the book and had so many thoughts to share that I dedicated a whole episode to it. You may be surprised by what the science shows. I know I was, so you won't want to miss it! • 29. The Psychology of eating with Brook Simonson

    29:56
We may not realize it, but eating is not just an activity - it is a series of behaviours that stems from our perceptions, emotions, and personalities. It really is like its own branch of psychology, and without training ourselves to have the right mindset, it's hard to be mentally self-aware of our everyday choices. Today I am talking with Brooke Simonson of the Health Investment to see how we can best wrangle control over our minds when it comes to our own wellbeing.
