Market returns are secondary to this driver of returns

Season 6, Ep. 28

In this week's edition of Unconventional Wisdom, Mark goes through the process of playing devil's advocate for his ETF choice for Australian equity exposure. An important exercise for all investors, as it ensures that there are no biases at play and helps you make a strong decision about securities that you choose to include or exclude in your portfolio. He runs through detailed analysis for why it should be included in his portfolio.

This week in Future Focus, Shani explores trusts. In a meeting with a tax specialist, she was pointed towards them as a way to minimise tax, especially for those individuals on higher tax brackets. She looks at who these vehicles suit and when they might be too much effort with not enough reward.

Joseph tapped the insights of Morningstar’s energy analyst to compare integrated fuel and gas station company Ampol with its industry peer Viva Energy (the owner of Reddy Express). How might Australia’s biggest gas station firms fare in a world with more EVs? Are they likely to keep their Australian oil refineries open amid tough competition? And do the shares offer enough value and yield for income investors to look past these question marks? Find out in Joseph’s latest Stock Showdown!

Humans have a natural inclination to assume that expensive equals better. But is that the case with investing? Not really. Paying more often means getting less in return. Investors have largely taken this message onboard and clearly favour low-cost funds while rejecting more costly options. But are we missing out on better products by doing so? In this week's Young & Invested, Sim explores if investors are too obsessed with fees and when paying extra may be worth it.

  • 19. Why you shouldn’t take tips from professional investors

    17:18||Season 7, Ep. 19
    Professional investors operate in a very different environment from individuals. Their careers, compensation, and business objectives are often tied to performance relative to a benchmark. They manage large pools of capital and are supported by teams of analysts, access to sophisticated data, and significant research resources. But those advantages also come with constraints that shape how they invest. We run through why these constraints might mean a mismatch between their opportunities and top picks, and yours.Would you like more free insights from Mark, Shani and the rest of the Morningstar team? • 18. Is the relationship between risk and return broken?

    13:42||Season 7, Ep. 18
    After more than a decade where US technology stocks dominated global markets, late 2025 and early 2026 saw signs of a rotation. Less glamorous sectors like industrials and consumer staples, companies often considered ‘boring’ began to outperform the high-flying tech names that had captured investors’ attention for years. We revisit the work of Bob Haugen, a pioneering quantitative investor and academic who spent much of his career challenging a core assumption in finance: that higher risk should lead to higher returns. Haugen argued the opposite - that lower-volatility stocks often outperform higher-volatility stocks over time.You can find the full article here.Would you like more free insights from Mark, Shani and the rest of the Morningstar team? 15:04||Season 7, Ep. 14
    The financial services industry tends to focus on how important it is to get started as early as possible. Starting to invest in your 20s provides a powerful advantage through compounding, but investors in their 30s, 40s and 50s have significant opportunities to build wealth and meaningfully improve financial outcomes. • 13. The big bets you’re taking in passive investments

    20:10||Season 7, Ep. 13
    The issue with investing in broad market index products is that you are anything but a passive investor. Owning the market does not mean that you own everything equally. When you look closely, many of the most popular ETFs in Australia embed a set of structural bets that can materially shape outcomes over time. Mark and Shani run through these exposures in common passive ETFs, and alternatives for investors that need it.Read the full article here.To get 50% off a 12-month Australian Shareholder's Association membership, click here and enter the code MORNING50.
