    In this episode, we sit down with Elaine Maimon to discuss reopening schools and the future of higher education amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Elaine was the president of Governors State University (GSU), the only public university in the South Suburbs of Chicago. Through her thirteen years as its president, she helped lead GSU through the Great Recession of 2008-9, the Illinois budget crisis and in the last months of her presidency, the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Before heading GSU, Dr. Maimon was Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage and Vice President of Arizona State University, where she led the West Campus. She has also served on the boards of the American Council on Education (2015-20), the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), and will soon be at the American Council on Education (ACE) as a special advisor to its President. She is a prolific writer in professional publications and is the author of Leading Academic Change: Vision, Strategy, Transformation.     In this 2nd part of our Supreme Court debrief installment, with University of Michigan Law Professor Leah Litman, we discuss the DACA case, in which the Supreme Court ruled against the Trump administration’s rescission of the Obama DACA program because it was “arbitrary and capricious.” We also discuss Little Sisters of the Poor v. Pennsylvania, also known as the Contraceptive Coverage case. We finally take a broader look at where the Roberts court stands on a crucial issue for America’s future in the 2020 election and beyond: voting rights.   Professor Litman teaches and writes about constitutional law, federal post-conviction review, and federal sentencing at the University of Michigan Law School. In addition, she is one of the co-hosts and creators of Strict Scrutiny, a podcast about that examines the U.S. Supreme Court and other legal decisions.     In this episode, with Juliette Kayyem, we discuss the recent disturbing events involving federal agents from the  Department of Homeland Security and other governmental agencies going into the city of Portland, Oregon and now threatening to come to Chicago, Illinois and other cities. We also talk about whether this use of federal force is legal, whether it is a wise policy, whether it is an appropriate response to protests in the aftermath of the devastating killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other Black lives in America.  We are joined by Juliette Kayyem, who is currently the Senior Belfer Lecturer in International Security at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, where she is faculty chair of the Homeland Security and Security and Global Health Projects. She is also the author of Security Mom, a memoir that explores the intersection, and commonalities, of her life in homeland security and her life as a mother and appears frequently on CNN as their on-air national security analyst. Most recently, she was President Obama’s Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security. There she played a pivotal role in major operations including handling of the H1N1 pandemic and the BP Oil Spill response; she also organized major policy efforts in critical infrastructure protection and community resiliency.     This episode, with former University of Chicago Law School Dean and University of Chicago Provos Geoffrey Stone, is part 1 of our Supreme Court Debrief. We discuss two cases this episode — Harris Funeral Home vs EEOC, which involved whether employers could fire transgender employees for how they sexually identify, and June Medical, which looked at whether a Louisiana law that required doctors who perform an abortion in a clinic to have admitting privileges in a nearby hospital was unconstitutional — along with Professor Stone's latest book, "Democracy and Equality: The Enduring Constitutional Vision of the Warren Court."  Professor ​Geoffrey R. Stone is the Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago. Professor Stone joined the faculty in 1973, after serving as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. Professor Stone was appointed by President Obama to serve on the President’s Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies, which evaluated the government’s foreign intelligence surveillance programs in the wake of Edward Snowden’s leaks. He has also written amicus briefs for constitutional scholars in a number of Supreme Court cases, including Obergefell v. Hodges, the marriage equality case, and Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstadt, the abortion case involving admitting privileges for doctors in Texas.
