Gloucester History Festival Special Series: Trailer

Gloucester Intro

Hello and welcome back to History with Jackson, Welcome to our Gloucester History Festival special series! Today we are heading to Gloucester as we have been invited to the Gloucester History Festival to cover some of the amazing talks that are happening today. During the course of this special series, we will be talking to some of the historians and people at the festival about their talks, and content!

Now I just wanted to let you know what this festival is about! The Gloucester History Festival is where history unfolds in one of the most historically fascinating cities in the UK! This year’s festival theme is Quests and Curiosity and over two weeks, from September 2nd to September 17th, 2023, offers an impressive array of over 150 events, starting off with Gloucester Day celebrations and including tours, talks, Heritage Open days, exhibitions and the intriguing Blackfriars Talks.

This year the Blackfriars Talks feature more than 100 of Britain’s best-known historians, broadcasters, and authors. These thought-provoking discussions take place over the course of nine days within the medieval venue of Blackfriars Priory, built in 1249, the oldest history festival venue in Britain which contains the UK’s oldest surviving library, the medieval Scriptorium, built in the 13th century.

Where better to delve into the rich tapestry of the history of monarchy and their palaces than beneath the ancient priory beams, donated to the priory by Henry III, in the city where he was crowned?

But Gloucester is a city with a deep political and cultural heritage. From its role as an important Roman Colonia to playing a pivotal role as a parliamentary stronghold during the Civil War, it has seen power wax and wane. Its victory against the Royalist Siege in 1643 is commemorated annually on Gloucester Day on 5 September marking the beginning of the Festival each year.

Gloucester's iconic cathedral has graced the silver screen in productions such as Harry Potter and Wolf Hall and the spire can be glimpsed from the festival venue as we hear from a number of stars of stage, screen and airwaves over the course of the festival.

The Festival returns next year for the Spring Weekend, taking place from Friday, April 12th, to Sunday, April 14th, 2024, and again in Autumn 2024, from Saturday, September 7th to Sunday, September 22nd promising even more historical insights and adventures. If you missed it this year, be sure to plan to come along in 2024.
