Ep 63 - Black Sabbath Headless Cross

Part 3 of this 4 part mini series on the mighty Black Sabbath has now come round to my Sabb everyone has their own period and album from the lords of darkness. And this one is mine i make no bones that this one might be a little biased but hey at least i'm honest about it. I got to full fill a life long ambition by interviewing Tony Martin a few months back for his new album Thorns.

But as i do it went on for a good hour and we covered a lot of Sabbath era stuff mostly Headless Cross and TYR. Here is the link for you to enjoy the interview and watch yours truly trying not to lose it with his hero. https://metal-roos.com.au/interview-ex-black-sabbath-vocalist-tony-martin-discusses-latest-solo-album-thorns/

It is also on Spotify if you just want the audio part of the interview.

    01:00:03|
Winter is coming and so we’re dragging you down into the murky depths of doom with a look at Ancient Dreams, the third slab of heaviness from Candlemass. It’s 1988, the riffs are thick, the atmosphere is bleak, and Messiah Marcolin’s voice still sounds like it’s echoing from a cathedral built in hell. I tear into the album track by track—warts, wonders, and all—and ask the big question: does it crush like Nightfall, or does it stumble under its own weight? Tune in and find out. Doom awaits. As mentioned Ep 56 - Doom, Doom we are all Doomed!!!!!! is a starting point to the nuts n bolts of Doom Metal.....

  • EP 220 Metal Church's eponymous first album feel its power.

    01:00:52|
Welcome back, headbangers! This week on Heavy Metal Tones, we're diving into the crushing debut from one of thrash metal's most underrated pioneers - Metal Church's self-titled 1984 album.Emerging from the fertile metal scene of Aberdeen, Washington, Metal Church burst onto the scene with a raw intensity that bridged the gap between traditional heavy metal and the emerging thrash movement. The powerful vocals of David Wayne, whose distinctive high-pitched screams became a hallmark of their sound. The album's nine tracks showcase a band already confident in their musical vision - from the epic opener "Beyond the Black" to the menacing "Merciless Onslaught." Lyrically, Metal Church tackled themes of apocalyptic destruction, societal collapse, and religious hypocrisy - perfectly complementing their aggressive instrumental attack. What sets this debut apart is its technical precision coupled with an unrelenting heaviness. Dual guitarists Craig Wells and Kurdt Vanderhoof delivered intricate riffs and blistering solos while the rhythm section of bassist Duke Erickson and drummer Kirk Arrington maintained a thunderous foundation throughout.Often overshadowed by their more commercially successful peers, Metal Church's debut remains a testament to the raw power and innovation of early American metal. Join us as we celebrate this thrash classic, track by track, and explore how it influenced generations of metal acts to follow.www.patron.com/heavymetaltones
