Good Humans with Cooper Chapman
#192 Dr Mathew Iasiello - Understanding Mental Wellbeing, Languishing & the Future of Mental Health
In this episode of the Good Humans Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Matthew Iasiello, a leading mental wellbeing scientist whose research is transforming how we measure and promote positive mental health.
Matt's work centers around the dual-continua model of mental health, which challenges the idea that mental illness and mental wellbeing are simply opposite ends of the same spectrum. Instead, his research shows they are distinct but interconnected, leading to new approaches in mental health treatment, prevention, and recovery.
One of Matt’s key areas of focus is languishing—a mental state where people aren’t necessarily experiencing mental illness but also aren’t thriving. Many of us live in this “stuck in the middle” space, feeling uninspired, unmotivated, and disconnected. Matt and his team at Be Well Co recently conducted a major study examining languishing in Australia, uncovering its impact on individuals and society.
In this insightful conversation, we explore:
✅ What is languishing? How to identify when you’re stuck in this state
✅ The science behind mental wellbeing and its link to mental illness
✅ How we can use the dual-continua model to rethink mental health strategies
✅ Findings from Be Well Co’s recent research on mental wellbeing in Australia
✅ Practical, evidence-based tools to shift from languishing to thriving
This episode will challenge the way you think about mental health and provide powerful, research-backed insights on how to move from simply surviving to truly thriving.
