I’m honored to welcome a special guest, Ms. Chelsea Burkett, a fire prevention specialist at Cal Fire. Cal Fire, short for California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, is the state agency responsible for wildland fire protection and management in California. It's one of the largest firefighting agencies in the U.S.
In our chat Chelsea talks about the process of identifying and fighting against a wildfire, the trend of wildfire occurrences in California, some of the key factors that contribute to the intensity and frequency of these wildfires, how climate conditions impact the risks, how the future of wildfire management evolves in California, advice for residents, and the best ways to prevent wildfires and mitigate the damage when they occur. Today I’m honored to welcome a very special guest, Dr. Peggy Hellweg. Dr. Hellweg is a highly respected seismologist whose groundbreaking work has significantly advanced our understanding of seismic activity and earthquake monitoring.Before 2000, Dr. Hellweg dedicated many years to extensive research and studies across multiple universities, focusing on science with a specialization in Seismology. Between 2001 and 2021, Dr. Hellweg was at the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory as Operations Manager for the BSL's network of high quality seismometer/accelerometer stations. She was previously Project Manager for the Earthquake Early Warning activities at the BSL and spearheaded outreach to users of the EEW system, CISN ShakeAlert.
