The Wounded Healer

Season 2, Ep. 12

When parts of your childhood are lined with darkness, it can be hard as an adult to release yourself from the fear that was cast upon you. You can end up travelling through life carrying the weight of your past traumas, comparing yourself with everyone you meet.

But, if you can surround yourself with people who make your heart smile, then you too will find the freedom that comes with seeing the beauty beyond the ordinary. You will discover what it is that makes you tick. You will know what it feels like to be understood and you will know what it is to find your very own Wonderland.

If you are struggling to come to terms with parts of your own story, then I truly hope that my conversation with Lize Venter, will help you to know that your wounds, are also your treasures and that in letting go, you will make room for beautiful things that happen.

  • 13. Finding My Wings

    08:19||Season 2, Ep. 13
    As I close Season 2 of Flip It, I’m sharing a reflection on something that’s shaped so much of my storybook so far - my instinct to hold others up, often before myself. This episode is about finding more of a balance, about recognising the quiet cost of people-pleasing, and acknowledging the rewards of returning to yourself, not in defiance but with care and curiosity.So, if you’ve ever wondered how to nurture yourself alongside those around you or how to stand more firmly in your own truth, without becoming exhausted, then I hope you find some words of comfort and find your own pair of butterfly wings. To each and everyone one of you who have shared your story with me on the podcast and offline personally - thank you for being part of this season. Your stories, your listening, your support have meant the world to me…and I’m already looking forward to meeting you in the next chapter of Flip It! Connect with me: www.flipitglobal.com#flipitpodcast#FlipItwitLauraHearnInstagram: laura_lhearnTikTok: laura_lhearnWatch clips of this episode on YouTube: @FlipItwithLauraHearn Sign up to my newsletter and and join the Flip It community here:https://laurahearn.substack.com/If you have a story to share, I’d love to hear from you: www.speakpipe.com/FlipIt
  • 11. Acceptance

    47:55||Season 2, Ep. 11
    Life is unpredictable and as much as we try, we can never truly be in control. Everything changes and it is those changes that can make or break us, if we allow them to. The challenge is to cultivate the ability to truly accept whatever comes, because it is only by accepting change that we can truly live and experience life with freedom. When life is going well, acceptance comes easily, but what happens when you are faced with something that tests every part of your being? My guest this week has had to accept a part of himself that has tested his mental, emotional and physical self in ways that many of us can only imagine. Jonathan has taught me that the capacity of the human mind to overcome hardship is astonishing, and that acceptance is a choice - a hard one, but in his words, most definitely a choice. So, if you find yourself struggling to make sense of what you are going through, I hope my conversation with Jonathan will help you to begin your own journey towards accepting life on life’s terms.
  • 10. Who am I?

    39:04||Season 2, Ep. 10
    Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of addiction and mental illness, including eating disorders. Please listen with care.Who am I? It's a question that has swirled around in my head for many years and filled endless pages of my journals. Never feeling like you fit in the world or with yourself feels incredibly lonely. Like some kind of disconnect you search to fuse together the pieces to feel complete. It’s a path that can take you everywhere and anywhere other than to you. We all deserve to feel like we are at home in our skin and as my guest this week has taught me, the key to that door lies with you and you only. Annika Samuelson, has been on a journey to find that key that many of us could never truly imagine. One that has haunted her from the day she was born. Yet at every hurdle and challenge, she found the courage to never compromise who she knew she was deep down. The beauty of life is to not fit in, and so I hope this episode can help you to embrace who you are, because when you accept yourself, the world has no choice but to do the same.
  • 9. Reframing Your Inner Narrative

    09:39||Season 2, Ep. 9
    How often do you pay attention to the words that swirl around in your head day in day out? The ones that constantly speak to you like a never-ending stream of conscious chatter.And if you are wondering what I am talking about, take a moment to pay close attention to the one voice that is speaking to you right now - the one asking you if you have such a voice! This is the one that asks and answers its own questions, going back and forth worrying about things over which it has no control over.This voice is the narrator to your outside world, how it shapes you and your reality. It is the link between your past, present and future stories you tell. And because I realised that my own was clouding my reality, I worked hard to reframe it into one that is clearer, inviting and filled with optimism.So, if you find yourself stuck in a narrative that leaves you tired and full of self-doubt, then I hope this episode finds its way to you, and just know it is possible to quieten it with a little reframing.
  • 8. How Do You Define Success?

    42:13||Season 2, Ep. 8
    Valuing how successful you are based on how much is in your bank account or how many followers you have on social media, is one way to ticket to feeling completely unsuccessful. Success can never be found in something you can buy, get or be given - because the goal posts you set will always move. But when society pushes a narrative that bigger is better, how can you let go of external pressures that dictate what it means to be successful? For my guest this week, it was only when he reached breaking point that he ‘woke’ up and realised that he was actually one of the most successful and wealthy humans alive. Sam Thomas has worked hard to define his own version of what success means - a definition that is built on all the things that money can never buy. He is now on a mission to spread his message that success is something that only matters to you and the people who believe and support you. So, wherever you are in your journey of figuring out what it means to be successful, wealthy or valued, I hope this episode will help you to write your own definition of success - one that ‘feels’ right for you. Connect with Sam Thomas: https://www.different-hats.co.uk/Connect with me: www.flipitglobal.com#flipitpodcast#FlipItwitLauraHearnInstagram: laura_lhearnTikTok: laura_lhearnWatch clips of this episode on YouTube: @FlipItwithLauraHearn Sign up to my newsletter and and join the Flip It community here:https://laurahearn.substack.com/If you have a story to share, I’d love to hear from you: www.speakpipe.com/FlipIt
  • 7. How to Flourish in Life with Corey Keyes

    38:18||Season 2, Ep. 7
    When was the last time you felt ‘alive’ - truly alive? The kind that awakens your soul and spirit with a flurry of butterflies. Perhaps you can’t remember and instead feel like you are living on autopilot - just going through the motions of life. Some might call it ‘existing’ but for my guest this week, their experience of feeling a constant “restless emptiness” became almost too much to bear. On a mission to heal his own wounds and to live a life full of colour, Corey Keyes became a sociologist to find out if other people felt the same. His research eventually led to him coining the terms “languishing” and its antidote “flourishing”, or good mental health. But, what saved Corey from his past was something that couldn’t be found in books or academia, but something much closer to home. So, if you ever find yourself feeling low, sad or as if this world is weighing you down, I hope my conversation with Corey will help you to build a buffer against the pressures of modern life and find true flourishing.Connect with me: www.flipitglobal.com#flipitpodcast#FlipItwitLauraHearnInstagram: laura_lhearnTikTok: laura_lhearnWatch clips of this episode on YouTube: @FlipItwithLauraHearn Sign up to my newsletter and and join the Flip It community here:https://laurahearn.substack.com/If you have a story to share, I’d love to hear from you: www.speakpipe.com/FlipIt
  • 6. Finding Your Purpose

    42:22||Season 2, Ep. 6
    Feeling as though you are different and that you don’t quite ‘fit,’ can leave you questioning yourself and battling to find your place in the world and your purpose. And when your entry into this world isn’t one where you are loved and nurtured by the two people who created you, that feeling of being the odd one out, is ever more present. You may find yourself looking for your purpose in all kinds of places, places that only ever offer a short term fix to fill the void. Yet, when you look outside of yourself, you discover not only that you are not so different after all, but that you are far more than what your circumstances dedicated. My guest this week knows this all too well and found his own sense of meaning in the world, by helping others to realise the same can be true for them. So, if you have ever felt hopeless or that you don’t belong in this world, then I hope my conversation with Theo Krynauw will help you to know that you do, and that when we meet people through a lens of understanding instead of judgement, we can offer another a little piece of hope to keep them going. Connect with Theo, Angie and Ollie: https://www.sparklekids.co.za/Connect with me: www.flipitglobal.com#flipitpodcast#FlipItwitLauraHearnInstagram: laura_lhearnTikTok: laura_lhearnWatch clips of this episode on YouTube: @FlipItwithLauraHearn Sign up to my newsletter and and join the Flip It community here:https://laurahearn.substack.com/If you have a story to share, I’d love to hear from you: www.speakpipe.com/FlipIt
  • 5. To Follow Your Head or Your Heart?

    11:29||Season 2, Ep. 5
    I have been at a complete crossroads for a little while now. I describe it like one of those you find in the outback of Australia. Where you can see for miles and miles either way, yet you have no idea what might be on the horizon of either – so you just stay sat in the middle sweating it out under the scorching sun, until you fall into a complete and utter burnout. And burn I did.  You see, when you feel so drained and exhausted, your decisions feel muddled and so you ask everyone around you for their advice – well at least this is what I did. But for every nugget of wisdom that was shared with me, I found myself even more unable to choose which path to follow. Do I take the path that my head was pulling me towards, or do I begin to walk the path my head was calling me to walk. With them both shouting and vying for my attention, I turned to the internet and asked, “should I follow my head or my heart…gut or intuition”? After a lot of digging and a lot of contradictory opinions, I concluded that it was me who had the answer all along, I just needed to do what I had always done before in moments of confusion and uncertainty – take a moment to pause, breathe and welcome both my head and heart in.  So, if you find yourself in unfamiliar territory or unsure as to which path to follow next, I hope this episode will help you to feel a little less alone in your own experience – and to know that both your head and your heart are only ever doing their best to look out for you.
