13: Laura - Kristen Lopez of Ticklish Business
Season 7, Ep. 13
•
Vera Caspary's LAURA was translated to screen for the first time in the heyday of the Hayes Code and classic film. So how does one capture the essence of a novel about a career girl coveted by three very different men, only to meet her grisly fate at the hand of one of her jealous suitors? By hiring Vincent Price, of course!

19. 19: Lonesome Dove - Lynne & Leslie of Fine Beats & Cheeses
01:54:08||Season 7, Ep. 19When I was a little kid, my dad's favorite song was Roy Rogers & Dale Evans's "Happy Trails." Here are the first few verses:Happy trails to you, until we meet againHappy trails to you, keep smilin' until thenWho cares about the clouds when we're together?Just sing a song and bring the sunny weatherHappy trails to you, 'till we meet againSome trails are happy onesOthers are blueIt's the way you ride the trail that countsHere's a happy one for you.So, I suppose it's fitting that FBOL ends (for now? maybe?) while talking about one of America's great Westerns, Larry McMurtry's LONESOME DOVE. Everything is in this book, partially because it's over 900 pages long, and partially because so much of America stopped progressing in the 1870s. This book is everything, and it is wonderful. I decided not to cut it down into two episodes, but I understand that two hours of book talk is a lot. I hope you all get as much out of it as I did recording it with Lynne & Leslie. Please follow them over at their show Fine Beats & Cheeses: http://finebeatsandcheeses.comThey also have a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/FineBeatsandCheeses/postsAnd if you want to keep in touch with ME, I am still podcasting over at Ticklish Business, where we have a lot in store for the rest of this year! https://www.patreon.com/c/TicklishBiz/home

He manages to bring it back to Shirley Jackson rather eloquently in this episode!
Throwback: Jaws- Amanda Smith
01:04:12|If you're familiar with the movie, it means you probably know NOTHING about the book. JAWS by Peter Benchley is an absolute classic, a multi-million dollar earning blockbuster book turned movie that just about MADE Steven Spielberg. But what's up with the novel? Just some of your classic summertime, monster-movie beach read type stuff like mafia-led real estate fraud, class politics, and dead sheep. Released 20 years ago this year, the novel-length personal essay on Vowell's own ruminations on murder, death, and the American dream is really hitting... well, not differently, but exactly the same as when we first read it in 2005.Grab a copy of the book today: https://bookshop.org/p/books/assassination-vacation-sarah-vowell/951959?ean=9780743260046&next=t
