Ask an Adviser: Charlie Viola on investing for kids & portfolio construction

Season 7, Ep. 21

Looking for sound financial advice but worried about the cost? You’re not alone. Only about 10% of Australians receive advice.

So we’re starting a new series called: Equity Mates Ask the Adviser, a series of episodes featuring some of Australia's top advisers. You'll have the opportunity to ask them anything, and we'll cover a range of topics beyond investing. Kicking off the series is Charlie Viola, partner and managing director of Wealth at Pitcher Partners in Sydney. With $2.2 billion in funds under management, Charlie advises high net worth and ultra-high net worth individuals and has been recognised as one of the top advisers in Australia by Barrons.

In this episode, Charlie shares his insights on the key principles of portfolio construction. Diversification and asset quality are crucial, he advises. Don't put all your eggs in one basket! Instead, choose high-quality assets and invest regularly. But he shares his thoughts on what to do if you’ve got a small amount to invest, and are aspiring to be one of his clients.

Ren and Bryce also dive deeper with Charlie on topics such as constructing portfolios in a high inflation, high interest rate environment, savings accounts, types of assets, frequency of cash deployment, and when to keep cash on the side.

This was a great opportunity for Equity Mates to learn from one of the best in the business. Send your questions for more Ask the Advisers here.
