Dr Jen Gunter | The Menopause Manifesto

Ep. 199

Dr Jen Gunter returns to the podcast to discuss all things menopause; the biology of it and the narrative around it.

In researching her latest book, The Menopause Manifesto, it struck Jen how the patriarchal narrative around menopause was actually hindering women, which is why the book became a manifesto to empower women with accurate information around what happens to their bodies during this time.

As she says in the show, ‘it shouldn’t be an act of feminism to understand menopause, but it is’.

During this conversation, @drjengunter and I discuss:

  • Why it’s so wrong to think of your last period as an expiry date on your femininity.
  • Why being empowered and making empowered choices requires access to accurate information.
  • Why a patriarchal society doesn’t get to determine a woman’s worth.
  • The lifestyle choices you make in your 20s and 30s that can positively impact your long-term health and your menopause experience.
  • Why life can be better post-menopause.
  • How pseudo-science and snake oil have nothing to offer you other than to take your money.
  • The role of supplementation is treating menopause symptoms and whether anything will actually work.
  • Plus, many mentions of Thor, Chris Hemsworth, Gal Gal Gadot and Idris Elba.

Caroline Hirons has the uncanny and rare ability to make you feel as though you are capable of anything and can achieve whatever you set your mind to, which is why I speak to her often and appreciate her friendship hugely. When things were tough during lockdown, she was one of the first people I wanted to get on the podcast so she could share that energy with a global audience who might just need to plug into a little bit of what Caroline has got.If you're hearing it again, I hope it makes you feel amazing and if you're hearing it for the first time, I hope you love it!Subscribe to my Substack.

My friend, the makeup artist, author and brand founder Lisa Potter-Dixon, was one of the first people I asked to join me when I started the Feel-Good Habits podcast series. She is such good, warm and kind energy in real life and, when this series started in lockdown, it felt only fair to share that with a global audience. Unsurprisingly, she didn't disappoint. If you heard it before, I hope it makes you laugh again. If you're hearing it for the first time, I hope it makes your day.Subscribe to my Substack.

If you've been here a while then you may have heard this conversation with former Secret Service Agent, Evy Poumpouras before, but I do encourage you to listen again because this is a stand-out for me when it comes to the interviews I've done over the last eight years on this podcast. If you're new here, then you're in for a treat!Evy is full of so many incredible and empowering insights and a huge amount of wisdom and her life experience, as a police office and secret service agent, are the kinds of things you just don't normally have access to. The fact she shared so generously and gave so much in this conversation is why I think it's well worth a re-post.Subscribe to my Substack.
