The Emma Guns Show

Andrea McLean | Risking everything, navigating mental health challenges, low self-worth and following your gut.

Ep. 262

Andrea McLean is one of those people you already feel as though you know. Not least because she's been a familiar face on British television for two decades but because she has such an easy, warm, open and welcoming way with everyone she meets. And let me tell you, in the flesh, this magnetism is even more charming than you could imagine. She is also blessed with a dry wit and an excellent side-eye!

After years anchoring the liveliest panel on TV, the prime-time show Loose Women, she is now focused on her website and app This Girl is On Fire, which focuses on supporting women (and soon men) through midlife. It's not just her day job, it's a calling. Having navigated her own mental health struggles, crises of confidence and a constant drive to want to do better and be better, Andrea is committed to passing on and sharing everything that has worked for her with those who feel the same.

I open each podcast by asking my guest 'what's your relationship like with risk?' and, as you can imagine, Andrea's answer, as someone who walked away from one of the most coveted jobs for women in broadcasting, is an incredible one... We discuss being in bad relationships, trying to make a bad thing work, knowing when to listen to advice - and when to ignore it - and why admitting you're wrong can sometimes be the greatest gift.

Andrea was so open and honest and I'm thrilled to share this conversation with you...

In this week's Bullet Points, I discuss the Gregg Wallace scandal, a huge topic in the UK this week. I share my thoughts having worked with Gregg previously. As London is 'crowned' the Phone Theft Capital of Europe, I share how a trip to London changed my perspective and how it has influenced my behaviour in the city. Finally, I share a useful hack that might help you focus more. • The Power of a 'reframe', what depression looks like and ridiculous trends...

    36:26|
The power of the re-frame is something to explore in this episode of the podcast. I've set the bar quite high for myself in the past, especially professionally, and this year has been about relaxing that tight grip on 'success'. However, it has been a puzzler simply because a lot of the positive steps I've taken to relieve some of that pressure are the things I'd do when I was struggling with depression. In one instance, it allowed me to withdraw from the world, in another it's allowed me to show up as a better version of myself. So what's the difference? Also in this episode, I ponder whether being too self-aware is a fast-track to anxiety and I lose the pot over the current 'it' body cream.Email me at office@emmaguns.comSubscribe and comment on my Substack: https://emmaguns.substack.com/Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emmaguns/Listen to the #EmmaGunsShow for free on:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6goNFPSxewG2CiP4nBcNNY?si=1448e83ed0c84479Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-emma-guns-show/id1102982843?i=1000599251800or search 'Emma Guns' wherever you listen to your podcasts.

On this episode, let's talk about how the super short days are making it harder to regulate mood (read: be in a good one!), how the Wicked film press tour is quite the sight to behold and how Black Friday has gone from being a day to a month-long extravaganza.
