During his Question Time appearance, Laurence Fox, an actor, claimed that Britain is generally 'a tolerant place' (it is). As a result, he was called a 'white privileged male' by a 'professor of race and ethnicity', actors called for him to be banned from acting, unions denounced him as a 'disgrace', there was mass social media outrage...etc etc.But, he literally didn't say anything bigoted at all. On the whole, Britain is incredibly tolerant, a fact that a vast majority of immigrants to this country agree with. A long time ago in galaxy far, far away I used to be the furthest left it's possible to be politically. I still think left wing thought has a lot to offer, but like vast swathes of the country and the western world I also find so much of progressive discourse (some of which has seeped into mainstream 'liberal' politics more broadly) very annoying, irrational, and worse. A very quick episode in response to the disgusting terror attack in London this week. Parts of the media have simply refused to mention the words 'Islamism' or 'Jihadism' at all in relation to this attack. That amounts to shielding this murderous ideology from critique. I discuss this and reflect on the week's horrific events. 

In recent years there's been an attempt by some on the left to shift the parameters of 'acceptable' thought and discussion. Instead of disagreeing with speakers or the points they are making, there's an increasing tendency to try to prevent those speakers from being given a platform at all. To take one example, on university campuses, 'progressive' students have literally rioted, set things on fire, and physically assaulted other students and speakers on numerous occasions because the speaker or topic under discussion is deemed 'offensive', 'far right', 'extremist', etc, etc.  Why is this the case, does it amount to censorship, and what are the implications for free speech?
