Drum and Drummer

It was a pleasure to be joined by Ollie Harding this week. With a final tour with The Shires coming up we looked back at his 12 years with the band, how moving to Manchester got him started in the session world and doing anything to avoid playing the cajon. We also discussed dealing with cancelled tours, being financially sensible, the merits of going to university and Ollie gives us the secrets of playing on TV for James Blunt. This week we had a lovely chat with Bob Wynne! As well as teaching up to 80 kids a week in schools Bob also runs Bob’s Drum School, a private teaching studio based in Rotherham. Alongside teaching 6 days a week Bob also plays gigs and is heavily involved at the UK Drum Show. We chat about his teaching setup, his dislike of mini burgers and moving to Denmark for 6 months to join the circus. On this week’s show we hear all about Ben’s holiday in Athens from a shaky start to visiting the Acropolis and sipping on some crisp, cold Alfas. George has bought a big ride cymbal and finally got his ear on the mend. Ben’s in Greece on holiday so we recorded this episode in advance. George is working hard on his finger technique and Ben has been prepping for his first dep gig in a while. George is still fighting his infected ear and resisted temptation at Graham Russell Drums. Ben’s off to Greece and went to see his old band, Oxygen Thief, play in Bristol. Support George and support the ‘no-burp petition’! While Ben talks about his grip and prep for an upcoming dep gig George has ended his summer run of gigs with a windy performance on Eastbourne bandstand and has parted ways with his childhood cymbals. Bad ears and good eyes are first on the agenda this week but which one of us has a swollen ear and which one has the eyes of a fighter pilot? George steals some sticks from Newcastle and Ben has set up his mega kit with the Yamaha Hexrack and reskinned all 6 toms. We also discuss what’s the minimum info required to say yes to a gig. While Ben’s been pushing back on rumours about his mum’s demise, George has been back on the road up to Scotland via Birmingham and Newcastle and invested in some drum mics. Ben has finally completed his Yamaha Stage Custom mega kit thanks to the guys at Rubix Drums in London (and no thanks to James Gillingham). On this week’s show we’re talking playing football with the ‘bigger boys’, Ben’s new sofa has arrived and George has played a gig at another castle. Ben also came home with a load of free drum gear from the tip and George has got the bug to add more toms to his kit. Also the new single from Archie Mac featuring Ben on drums, trombone and trumpet is out now (link below).
