The art of breathing correctly: James Nestor

Ep. 44

It may be easy to think – we all know how to breath, but many of us do it in a way that is not optimal for our health.

This week’s guest is science journalist and best-selling author of 'Breath, the new science of a lost art' James Nestor.

The science shows breathing through your nose is key, as is not over-breathing – something we are prone to doing, particularly when stressed.

James has been part of some extensive research which shows the damage that mouth breathing can do, and it is pretty startling.

We talk about the optimal number of breaths to take per minute, how breathwork can be transformative when it comes to things like releasing trauma and how it can have a dramatic impact on sports performance too.

We also talk about mouth taping at night - something I have done (in the face of ridicule!) for several years. Thankfully James does it too, and shows why it can be so beneficial.

There are some really simple tweaks you can make after having listened to this episode which will benefit your overall wellbeing – and I’m excited to share this chat with you.

  • Don't Focus On The Outcome: Sir Chris Hoy

    07:57
It's not about the end goal, it's about enjoying the steps along the way. I had the pleasure of catching up with Sir Chris Hoy recently, and it reminded me that he is one of those relatively rare high performers who retain humility and stay truly grounded while enjoying huge success, as he did in winning gold medals at three Olympic Games. So many people put so much stock in the outcome alone, and what it supposedly says about them as a person, that they don't enjoy what they do for its own sake. Chris points out the real treasure is in finding something you're passionate about and giving it your all, but crucially enjoying it for its own sake, not simply as a means to an end.My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release. • How To Sit With Difficult Emotions: Clarke Carlisle

What are you like at sitting with difficult emotions - like fear, sadness or anger? Let's be honest, it's not fun. But our ability to sit with discomfort is so important, although most of us tend to distract ourselves where possible, which is much easier these days with the digital distraction devices in our pockets. Clarke Carlisle explains how he has learned to sit with his emotions, and how he has taught the language of emotions to his children - an extremely valuable exercise that we use in our home.Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release. • FLOW - Part 2: Jonny Wilkinson, Damon Hill, Frankie Dettori, Goldie Sayers & Jos Buttler

    32:30
Jonny Wilkinson, Damon Hill, Frankie Dettori, Goldie Sayers and Jos Buttler share their experiences of flow. This follows on from the last episode in which Alex and I discussed how to get more moments of flow into your everyday life at will. Do listen back to that one if you haven't already - or if you need a reminder. During flow, times distorts and our sense of self disappears, which begs the question - if it can disappear, just how real is it?My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release. • How To Get More Flow In Your Everyday Life

    48:36
Flow is “a state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience is so enjoyable that people will continue to do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it” - Mihaly CsikszentmihalyiFlow is when we feel and perform at our best, and while it frequently has something of a mystical quality to it, we are all familiar with it to various degrees. In this episode, Alex and I also talk about those moments when we are 'self-conscious', which is basically the opposite of being in flow, and tend to feel bad and perform poorly. And then we seek to answer the important but elusive question: how can we experience more flow in our everyday life, even at will. In the second half, I share the best way I know to experience the sense of ease, peace and subtle joy which are all characteristics of flow.My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release.
