Self-Awareness: Amy Williams MBE

Ep. 75

Amy Williams MBE became the first British athlete to win Gold at a Winter Olympics in 30 years at Vancouver 2010. Her event was Skeleton - which basically involves lying face down on a small sled, hurtling down an icy track at speeds upwards of 80 miles an hour. Not for the faint of heart. It took self-awareness for Amy to climb to the top of her chosen sport. Describing herself as shy and introverted, Amy stepped out of her comfort zone to even start Skeleton, and then worked hard at building her confidence and reducing the pressure she put herself under whilst still embracing her sensitivity. She stopped comparing herself to other people (a habit we would all do well to dispense with to some degree) and took notes in a journal every day, seeking those small improvements that add up and make all the difference over the long term. Amy has a fantastic new book out called Talent to Triumph, and we discuss many of the key themes in this conversation. It was a pleasure talking to Amy - and I hope you enjoy listening.

  • Confidence Comes From Preparation: Sam Warburton

"One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation." - Arthur AsheSo many of the elite performers I have spoken to over the last six years have exuded confidence. But what makes them so confident in their abilities? The answer — preparation! Once the building blocks are in place, you can let go and surrender to what happens. That's when magic happens.Hours of meticulous preparation allows top performers like Wales rugby legend Sam Warburton to walk into any situation with confidence. This he applied from a very young age, at school as well as on the pitch, and it has served him well throughout life.My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release. • The Darker Side of 'High Performance' - Caitlyn Jenner

    06:06
You cannot fill an inner void with accomplishments and approval. The reality is, many 'high performers' are driven by a desire to compensate for emotional wounds. This isn’t to cast judgement on so called "successful" people – it is just to suggest that putting them on a pedestal is simplistic and frequently overlooks deeper truths. This week's bitesize guest is Caitlyn Jenner - who won Olympic Decathlon Gold in 1976 as Bruce Jenner - and whose house in LA I visited to record the full length episode. My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release. It can be so easy to let resentments build and sweep things under the carpet, to avoid having the difficult conversation because you know it will be uncomfortable.
